I think it was broader than just the 552's, and I believe it was a design issue, since corrected, rather than a bad batch of parts.

Were the AA more prone to the contact issues given the heavier weight of the battery?

I don't know that they were. My 553 had the problem and that runs on 123's. I made a poll about this a while back if you guys search for it, a lot more users chimed in with their experience.
