I've tried to set my AR's up as multi use weapons. For the most part I think I've accomplished that. I do have one that is setup specifically as a hunting weapon. Yes, it could be used in a SPR role but that isn't its true purpose. The others that I own I ran all of them at one time or another in classes and they did nothing to hinder me in any way regardless of the class. I would use any of them in a HD situation or if I had to leave my residence for some reason. I believe you have to evaluate various possibilities and set your self up to handle the majority of what could take place. My multi-purpose AR's just have a sling, an Aimpoint, a white light and a stubby VFG. Nothing else.

    Gear

90% of these questions can be answered by actually using their rifle/gear. Prepping for bug-out? Then go on a hike/camping trip with your gear. You eventually figure out what you need/don't need. Want the perfect/all-rounded rifle setup? Then go shoot your rifle, hike with it, go to all day training classes.

I have to admit that I will argue with anyone that says a piston gun (especially an AUG) is more reliable or a better HD/CQB gun than a quality AR.

If it makes you feel better, I would gladly sit and talk to signkutter about our difference (face to face) while drinking a beer. Meaning, I think he is most likely a good American that loves his Country.

Hey Grant, I don't want to derail the thread so can I shoot you a PM to hear your full opinion on the AUG? I'm interested in getting one and am curious what your gripes are, I like getting as many different opinions as possible before making a choice.

    To OP and all else:

I might be experiencing a brain fart, but the last time I checked...

AR = Assault Rifle (AK, AUG, M-16, M-4, etc.)
AR 15= Armalite Rifle 15, (M-16 Mil variants)
    M4= Duh

    ...right?

I'm getting confused with terminology being tossed around like crazy in this dodgeball tournament.

To me, "AR" is short for AR-15 & any of its variants.
Similarly, "AK" is short for an AK-47 or any of its variants.

"Assault Rifle" isn't in my vocabulary.

Not Grant, but as someone with a passing interest in the AUG myself, I think you're going to hear something along these lines ...

What is it that you expect an AUG to do better, or more consistently, than an AR? Although training is always a relevant factor, the ergos of the gun aren't really on par with the AR, the trigger is dreadful by way of comparison and your configuration options are always going to be more limited. The AUG clearly has its compact size going for it, but so too does an AR/SBR. Whether or not some of the other so-called "limitations" of the platform are valid is probably up to each end-user to decide, but if you're just making a feature-by-feature list, things are going to get lopsided in a hurry.

I'd still like to own an AUG just to play with the possibilities. It is an interesting rifle with a decent reputation, and we're fortunate indeed to have them available again. That said, I don't necessarily consider the AUG a replacement, nor even a peer competitor for, a properly-configured AR. It is a cool curiousity and another type of tool in the toolbox, but probably better-suited to specific roles than the "do-everything" expectations that we tend to cast upon the AR. I think it is silly not to view the AUG as a rifle with some real potential, but if you're talking about potential on a truly exponential scale, then you end up right back where you started: with an AR hanging off your shoulder.

Sure. I will warn you though that I own one and think they are cool. So you won't get a "I hate them" opinion out of me.

Or, he might just say something like this.

    realistic expectations and regurgitated misinformation

Right tool for right job is part of it as well, quality comes at a cost, just like speed. Buy what you want, but have a purpose like C4 and other has stated, get good firearms, get good reputable training(lord knows I could use some more good training), and then get gear that would be more appropriate for you true use, no matter how cool it may be but at the end of the day and as I work in a gun store currently, its the choice /money of the customer , regardless.
