Cutting sight off of A2 gas block or new low profile gas block? Advice? Regrets?

I've read the A2 FSB is about the strongest there is. However I have considered going with flip up front sight to get out of the way of a 1-4x scope.

Recommend cutting the top off the A2? Should maintain good durable gas block mount to barrel and is cheaper. But no going back.

    Or

Properly remove whole A2 unit and replace with low profile gas block?

Done both. Recently cut off the sight on an A2 and installed a free float rail. As the rail covers the gas block it looks just fine. I have a Leupold VX-R Patrol with magpul MBUS.

Do a search, simple enough to do. Took me about half an hour........but get some new pins before you start as it is easy to goon up the pins taking them out and makes for a more secure job with the new pins. I didn't have to heat or do anything extra to get mine apart to do the work.

I'm a big fan of cutting down the FSB. Why?

    1. It's prealigned to the gasport, foolproof and no guesswork
    2. It's rock solid
    3. It's virtually free
    4. It's an excuse to use the Dremel

Just remember that once it is chopped and grinded you have no more resale value. If you can live with that and can do it properly I say go for it.

Depends on what the rifle is for. If its a hardcore SHTF type I say chop it and put a free float that covers it and run MagPul BUIS. I like pinned blocks only for anything that is a serious fighting rig. I dont trust anything less (personally I prefer Geissele).

If its a plinker, who cares...LOL

Is there any chance you might want to put an FSB back on there in the future? I chopped mine and then later decided to simplify my carbine and went back to magpul handguard and FSB. ADCO fixed me up, but it would have been easier to just take off a gas block and reinstall my FSB.

You are advocating the use of a Magpul MBUS for a serious use weapon?

To the OP, cut the A2.

Sure why not? They are an excellent setup. Apparently you havn't seen any of the drop tests where they came out on top eh?

OP is planning on running a primary optic and wanted flip ups. I personally prefer the A2 front sight as its the strongest setup on the planet. Some people dont like the reduction in clarity (shadow) it provides with magnified optics or the blocking of some sight picture on non-magnifying.

I have EoTechs on rifles with both and certainly it is nicer to have an unobstructed view, but its certainly far from a "deal breaker", for me...

If it work for you, drive on.
Many on this board feel the opposite.

    Same goes for the EOTech.

My suggestion is to read up before dispensing advice.
