I figured I'd start with the non-NFA set
14.5 pinned
18 (in planning stages)
20 (an A2)
and go from there lol

I see no need for more than 2 or 3: 1 SBR, 1 general purpose SHTF rifle, and 1 precision gun. Even then, you could narrow it to two, and have a CQB and general purpose upper for one of the lowers. I agree with everyone else here: If all you're doing is filling the safe with guns you'll never shoot, you might want to look at spending some of that gun money on ammo and training.
To each his own though; if you need one for urban combat, suburban combat, one for boarding ships, one for jungles, one for woods, one for deserts, one for mountains, one for snowy winters, one for dry winters, one for the plains, one for the tropics, one for over-the-beach operations, one for your birthday, one for Christmas, one for sunny days, one for rainy days, and one for zombies, go ahead.
I figure two-
A precision 20" rifle and a 16" carbine with an RDS. I'd have a third as a 10.5" SBR but I suspect it could easily replace the 16"

I am American
I'm trying to get it down to one AR and one handgun-you can only carry so much on two legs!
So next to my 6920 I have the M9 and my "hunting guns" a Browning A-bolt in .375 H&H and a S&W .500
But realistically two AR's is plenty unless you want to collect them then the sky's the limit!![]()

I have 4 sbrd lowers and I tried to have only 2, it is back up to 4 again.
The lowers just itch to be used.
As many as you can afford?!
I personally have two, with plans for at least one more. If you have a role that you want one to fill, then there's a need for it.
I agree with those who have opined that there's no set limit from a collection perspective. Looking at it practically I'd say it depends on the intended use(s). I'm personally happy with two: One "do it all" lightweight carbine that is set up for speed and reliability out to 200 yards, and a second that is precision oriented out to 500 yards.
