For that much less, you can get the KAC rail. I would just go ahead and get the Magpul edition.

On another note, you know how to tell the two rails apart, right?

The Troy has four screws on the side rails that lock up the upper and lower halves together, and has four sling swivel QD points, two on each side rail. Here it is:

The KAC has no QD points and doesn't have any screws locking the upper and lower halves together. However, the KAC's top rail has a single screw close to the delta ring that locks it into place, and also has a bottom rail that is a different height than the top rail. Here it is:

Justin, thanks for the primer on rails. I'm not very knowlegable in that area.

On general appearance, I believe the one I'm looking at has the KAC rails. Counter dude said "this thing's been sitting here for months and nobody's wanted to put out that kind of money for it".

In this store at least, the 6940 was $100 cheaper than the SOCOM 6920.

To those with experience on both platforms, is it a case of "six in one, half dozen in the other" or does one variant have something to recommend it over the other?
I have a 6940 and no major complaints. Given the choice, I would have taken a 6920 however. The 6940 was a trade with an FFL who wanted a handgun of mine, and that's what he had for quality AR in stock, which was limited by both the anti gun state I'm in and it was the height of panic buying, so I was damn happy to get it.

If the length of the rail is OK for you, and you don't plan to start changing rails or barrels and such, seems hard to go wrong with the 6940, but given the choice, I'd go with the 6920 due to the ability to customize and configure the AR to my tastes.

I'm not a high volume AR shooter and although I wish the rail on the 6940 was longer, it's not a bgg deal for me. At some point, I may get a more traditional M4 from DD, etc, if I want one, but not a major issue at this time.

I bought my 2013 SOCOM back in June, and it came with the KAC rail. That's good, but I bought it for the barrel. I love that barrel and would have bought it even if it came with the Troy rail. The decision has been confirmed any number of times since I bought it.

    Love my SOCOM.

But, I will probably end up putting a DD rail on it.

Do you have the weights for a regular M4 barrel, and the SOCOM?

So from reading all this I guess my 6920 I bought over a year ago and put a MI (Midwest Ind) rail on it is junk? My 6920 has the old "Restricted" roll marks..for those that are into that.

Also seems like since the Troy with the quick release points has more features than the Knights rail. Yes no?

The point is that the 6920 SOCOM was marketed as a clone for the guys who wanted that M4 "look." It was for the people who either wanted a rifle that looked like the one they had in the service or those who like .mil clone weapons. Colt charged a premium for the rollmark, heavier barrel, Matech sight, and KAC rail.

They then changed the features with no warning and people spending quite a bit extra for that clone rifle.....just found themselves buying a rifle that is no longer a clone. Sure, they can still buy the rifle and sell the Troy/buy a KAC....but they're still paying the $1500ish price for what was supposed to be a specific set of items. That is the crux of the issue.

And for your fishing comment on MI, no your rail is not the same as a Knights Armament, Centurion, Geissele, Noveske, etc rail. I didn't see where anyone said it was junk...but it is most certainly not in the same ball park as higher end rails.

I'm not fishing....I really don't know. I'm new at this but my rifle came with what I though was cool and didn't know any better at the time a VLTOR rail (gun shop dressed up) and when I got my red dot it couldn't co-witness due to the VLTOR rail height....so I sold it and bought the so called cheap MI rail. I keep hearing the Knights rail is better but remember I'm still new at this and can't see how it's better over the Troy or MI. That's all I am asking...why is it better? Thanks

mdrums, I misread your post and I apologize. MI is not terrible. It's just not built up to the standards of other companies. MI's latest rails are supposed to be better built and lighter than their previous offerings. But I haven't used or had my hands on them.

    Minor update:

Looks like I'm putting the SOCOM on layaway. The manager brought the box out from the back and the label read "2013 Configuration". I was examining the accessory packet (comes with one 30 round GI-type mag) and the rail panels are marked "KNIGHTS ARMAMENT". So I guess it's KAC rails on this particular example.
