Suggestions for a cheap but reliable shotgun

    HI
A good buddy of mine was looking for a cheap and reliable shot gun, I suggested a Remington 870. But I am looking for other types and brands, I also suggested mossberg defender. Your input is greatly appreciated , he is looking around the $300 range.
    Thank You

Remington 870s and Mossberg 500s are both cheap and plentiful. You can't go wrong with either one.

The Norinco shotguns are generally GTG also. I have a Hawk 88 Ghost Ring that I shot the living piss out of, and eventually wore out the extractor.

A quick swap for an old Wingmaster bolt assembly put me back in the game, and I expect this one will last quite a bit longer. You might consider one of these and upgrade the bolt out of the box.

Easy day: send your buddy to a pawn shop and find a used 870 Wingmaster or Mossberg 500 for $200ish.

Look for a good pawn shop special. There will be lots of 870's out there. Get a solid, basic 870 and upgrade the barrel and mag tube in time as funds will allow. Many basic vintage 870's will have high quality steel parts (trigger guard, extractor) that Remington now only includes on it's more expensive military and LE models. They really don't make them like they use to.

A Mossberg 590 is also a good bet. I would avoid Mossberg's more low end models.

I had a used Rem 870 wingmaster (with front/rear sights) for $150 a few years back from Gander Mtn. But, I never shot it, so sold it for $175

13 years on a Benelli Nova, ate everything easy to clean trigger assembly. Used for trap, waterfowl and just plain fun shooting and has never missed a beat, also been dropped kicked and while always cleaned it was definitely not babied.

This. Pawn shops are full of old Wingmasters and 870 Police trade-ins, for cheap. Score one, it'll probably run better than a brand-new 870 Express :P
Cyril: Oh now that's a breach of trust!

Lana: Do you really want to open this can of trust-breachy worms after I just found you and my ex-boyfriend with a dead hooker in the trunk?

    Cyril: ...I do not.

I will echo what others have said. Look for a used 870 or 590, and stay away from the low end cheap pumps.
