The Apple ear buds (the old style) suck for workout, the ear pods (the new style) never move. They don't feel tight in your ear, but they don't move.

Anything that seals in my ear is a no-go for me. I hate that feeling, and don't even like that style of earplug. The pods don't seal.

If that is your thing, I did come across an idea. Someone took one of those custom ear plug kits and used it to make a custom ear bud. They took the rubber from the ear plug kit and put it in their ear. The ear bud w/o the standard rubber was set into the custom ear plug before it fully cured. A short time later it was removed from the ear and a hole cut to allow sound to travel through. Instead of having a round rubber ear seal, you were left with one custom sized for your ear.

I have been using a pair or Adidas marked buds for a couple of years now. While I don't run a lot I do bike and sweat buckets. No issue with the sweat yet. They are the kind that stick into the ear so hearing ambient noise is difficult. May not be ideal for situational awareness. When I'm out and about I use the apple buds as they allow ambient noise.

    Situational awareness?

I'm kind of shocked that so many of you guys seem to run with earbuds. I've been fishing a local lake for years that has a popular jogging path around it, and many people run out there with their ears completely plugged with these things. I can't recall all of the times I've been directly behind someone within an arm's length and they're totally unaware of the fact that I'm there. Until now, I'd chalked it up to people living in crowded places losing their feral instinct.

What gives so many of you a sense of comfort while forfeiting any auditory feedback your ears would otherwise give you on your environment?

I run a lot on the school track nearby my house so the need to hear my surroundings is pretty low priority. Now if I'm running on the road I usually leave one out or just don't turn up the volume much.

I said much of the same in a previous thread about ear phones and I got some response about it's OK if you have "situational awareness."

Hearing is our second best sense (behind sight) for situational awareness, especially what's going on behind you.
Why would anyone limit their senses on the roads and trails?

I primarily run on treadmills. I also don't blast my music and I can hear quite a bit around me.

If you're out fishing at a local lake, how are you behind someone...at an arms length...while they're running? They just happen to be stretching near you all the time?

I didn't say I was at arms' length behind anyone running, scout. As you might imagine, people walk out there as well. Same thing applies - plugs in ears, not aware someone is near them, etc.

But, is there a reason it makes a difference whether you're walking or running if you have your ears plugged up?

The OP is asking for opinions on the best ear buds for his wife. Not our opinions on whether its ok to run/walk with head phones or not.
