They've been importing whole rifles to Canada for years, apparently - as I found out from a friend in Nova Scotia a while back.
I'd RATHER have their AK's and ammo. In the early '90's, I was paying $.99/box of 20 for their steel core 7.62x39 and .223!I miss THOSE days!

I've been over there a few times. I have bought material from the region a few times. The rules are different, their understanding of quality controls are different. You really need to have someone over there looking after your interests. They may know what they're doing, but it doesn't mean their way is the right way. I don't know how this will work out for small shops or individuals buying forged parts, but I know I've been consistently disappointed, and chinese parts we buy have the highest reject rates of any point of origin.
After a first batch coming to here for high quality introduction, they will find the way to cut cost by lower the standard. It won't show anything inferior until something happen, then they will say "too bad, you get what you paid for and you want it cheap". I will not buy those part knowing that it will explode into my face someday.
I can hear it now:
"you should have spent a little more and got a DPMS"![]()
Left to their own devices, I think there's a real tendency for most Chinese manufacturing to cut corners. OTOH, Apple has shown us that they can provide very high quality manufacturing services at lower cost. That's a big deal for Apple, but I'm not sure it's that big a deal when you scale way, way back to the levels we're talking about in the world of AR parts.
Another reason why it pays off to stay with known brands
We have loads of Chinese ARs up here. They're often ugly but all the running gear is usually solid.
The Chinese rarely struggle to make stuff that goes bang pretty reliably, in my experience. And their barrels are typically very good.
You could hit up Larry Vickers for more information. He was fairly recently looking to add a particular Chinese Ar to his collection. I'm certain he would have some understanding of their function.
Flawless, sub-moa fit and finish...all day long.
Full disclosure: I'm the editor of Calibre Magazine, which is Canada's gun magazine. In the past I've done consulting work for different manufacturers and OEM suppliers, but not currently. M4C's disclosure policy doesn't seem to cover me but we do have advertisers, although I don't handle that side of things and in general I do not know who is paying us at any given time.
