Any reason not to engrave my info on my scar17 's barrel?

I'm going to SBR my SCAR17. I will have a 13" and a 16" barrel. Since Scars are fairly valuable, I'd like to keep my upper unengraved just in case Iever need to or decide to sell it. Also, the upper is the serialized component, it is significantly more expensive than an average AR lower.

I was thinking I would engrave the 13" barrel so the OEM barrel could be reinstalled, leaving a clean gun that is easily taken off the registry.

I think this is a great plan.

Good idea. Engraving the short barrel is perfectly legal, and if/when the rifle has the 16 inch barrel on it, it's no longer an SBR and doesn't need to be engraved.

Is the barrel considered the firearm in regards to the SCAR, as the lower receiver is regarding an AR? I think not, but I could be wrong...

If it does work, then that's awesome.

The NFA states that the barrel, frame, or receiver can be engraved. (Section 6.2.1)

Very good to know. I was under the impression it had to be the serialized part.
    I paint spaceship parts.

There is no need to remove it from the registry, it is recommended. Since the upper is the "important" part so to speak and it is the registered part maybe you should consider marking the lower. Especially since you can get Handl defense lowers as a replacement.

Just remember that SBR's generally do not have much resale value, although the SCAR may be different in that regard.

This is the way to go for guns where there will not be a lot of BBL swapping.

I guess you just need to be sure that the engraving is visible without taking the rifle apart.

Not hard with a 13" SCAR 17 barrel, but would be more difficult with a CQC length SCAR 16.

This is what I plan to do with my 16S and 17S, but I will be getting a spare OEM trigger module for engraving. I have heard of too many issues with the Handl stuff, but it is indeed an option.
