I'm not a barrel expert by any means but I really can't see any cons other than added weight of a couple ounces.
Standardizing gas block sizes and maybe less barrel movement would be the pros.

CoryCop25, who makes the barrel in the pic you posted?

They are made for precisionfirearms.com by Lothar Walther to Precision's specs. I am not sure if Precision turns the barrels or not because they turn many of their own barrels. They retail for $325.00. I am going to have a T&E barrel before the end of the year to report back. I have been told that they are very accurate and rugged but I have no first hand knowledge.

It's really not a problem, just in my case I was trying to build a clone of a vintage AR, a Colt 654, which has a .625 FSB. While not a huge deal, is a visual difference that I am trying to avoid, and so may others if they are trying to build a certain clone.

They informed me that this will be the configuration of LW barrels from here on out. I didn't ask why, but I would assume because it simplifies production and keeps a more standard and uniform product. Other than in my case I really see no need for the .625 FSB and .750 is probably easier for the end user too.

Is it just me, or does it look like it has a different profile behind the gas block than it does past the gas block? It looks like it's .625" past the gas block, and .675" or .7" behind the gas block.

If that's the case, that makes a ton of sense!

First step down from chamber measures ~.680,
thinest point before starting to step up to the FSB is ~ .645,
after the FSB it goes down to ~.610,
and then right before stepping up a little before the threads it has tapered to ~.580,
Shoulder to the threads is ~.620

Accuracy with my calipers is only going o be so good.

Thanks for the measurements. Very interesting profile.

With my calipers I measured my 16" PSA CHF FN barrel labeled an ULW:

Under the handguards tapers from Chamber .640 to .600, then the gas block is .751. In front of the FSB it measures .612 then steps up to .695 at the MD.

My ARP 16" LW barrel uses a .750 gas block: per website

uses a standard .750 gas block like all of our barrels.

If I agreed with you, we'd both be wrong.

The last thing I want to do is hurt you,
but it's still on my list.

Seems like they may be adopting the STW profile across the entire barrel line up. Pretty interesting.

Or at least the philosophy behind the S2W. I think its a great idea, and a great profile.

It seems they really made a good choice on this, I would be interested in the weight difference between this LW profile and their old one.

It refreshing to see a company releasing multiple profiles that make sense, instead of continuing to pump out barrels that literally have a backwards profile.
