All these stories make me so glad I have a great local gunshop. I mean great. He held off raising prices during the panic as long as he can then there was a slight increase with the logic of he still had to pay employees and though he had less to sell and he didn't want to lay them off. He said "I want to be able to look my customers in the eye when this is over." He does not give the best prices on trade in's as opposed to selling private party because he sells them cheap. Used 6920 that people got at walmart and are selling off now go for $825 and that is in like new condition. He has a magpul 6920 right now for $925 that is hard to resist (I often pick them up keep the bolt and the lower and sell off the upper). Everyone gets excited over walmart 6920 for $1087, he sells them $40 bucks cheaper new. Transfers, 25 bucks, no tax. He has a huge selection and great staff. He gives the employees days off to go to rallies for gun rights and public meetings. I give him my business whenever I can.

I wish I had a quarter for every time I had a customer come in and ask me a question then spent the next hour explaining to me why I was wrong. Usually happened for several days running after the latest tactical gun rag came out. The gun business sucks. Period

Such is the nature of the beast that is retail. I sell welding gases and supplies, I cannot begin to explain how many times a day some good ol' boy stumbles into my shop and argues with me that everything I say is wrong, and then asks for a discount.

This is the reason I Got out of retail.

Used to sell auto parts way back in the day. Friday afternoon some fool would walk in needing something insane, like an aluminum head for a 30 year old Datsun...and then get mad at me as if I'm wrong because I didn't have one behind the counter.
Why do the loudest do the least?

For the same reason a Chevy salesman doesn't say that Ford makes a better car. He pushes what he sells.

We had a guy at SAR Show ask if we can get him a 40" 300 Blackout barrel. I thought I was hearing things. No, he was serious as hell. Never mind the potential dwell time issues, etc... No idea what was trying to do but I quit listening after a minute or so.

When my mother bought a double action revolver from a big chain in houston called carters country the salesman told her to keep the hammer on an empty cylinder. Turning a 5 shot into a 4 shot.
Another shop here recently didnt know vltor a5 buffers were proprietary

Check with RECOIL mag Pretty solid publication that typically won't waste their time with utter crap. They are also pretty honest with reviews, and the reviewers know their stuff. They many times try not to compare optics to Aimpoint that aren't even in the same league, and will go pretty down and deep with things like creep, grittiness, etc. Probably my fav magazine out there just due to the lack of garbage in them.

PS to the op, why bother going in to a store to "educate people". Only reason I see doing this is if your ego needs a strokin'. My rule... don't help unless asked. BUT its a judgement call if you see someone really being shafted with a bogus "bargain" to interviene. Even then mostly just better to watch the stupidity and chuckle it off later.

I haven't read through all of the replies, but I think I get the gist of it. The only better thread about gun stores is the "stuff I heard at the gun store" thread on Brian Enos (under humor obviously). I do not consider myself an expert by any means, but I do know how to shut up and listen when experts are there to be heard; so i've picked up quite a bit here, as well as from others. I do not work at the local gun store officially, but I have been called in from time to time to fill someone's shift, or when there is a sale. I have seen so much stupidity on both sides of the counter, that if I wasn't getting my primers with the extra money I make, I really would have a hard time continuing to work there. The truth is, for what most people do with their guns, the shrubmaster 6000 will probably work OK (plinking a whole 100 rounds a year). I have learned that many people are just looking for the cheapest price, and that is really all they care about. I have started saying things like " the Bushmaster will be alright as a plinking or fun gun, but it's really not up to par as far as a serious fighting gun." I feel like i'm being honest, but also not totally bagging on their potential purchase. For those rare customers who are interested in buying and crying once, and want a decent tool, they will ask some questions and hopefully I can teach them something. It's those few customers that make it worthwhile to work at the gun store on occasion (and the stories of stupidity that are good laughs at matches or a class).

I have been very happy to see my LGS stocking quality. When I first started to have an interest in ARs they stocked stuff like RR, DPMS, BM, etc. They still have that stuff, but they also stock Colt, DD, BCM accessories, Magpul, etc. The amount of quality stuff definitely improved, and I have overheard the employees discussing the research they have done to learn more about ARs.

I buy most of my ammo from them since they are very competitive with online prices, and I don't have to have it shipped. I have also purchased a number of used handguns from them.

Most of the folks working there are good people, but there are a couple of yahoos that think they know a lot more than they really know. But, I don't go there for advice, since I already know what I want before I walk through their door.
