My LGS is hiring. Ive been considering applying and working there just for shits and giggles, but I would most likely be fired. They sell mostly Sig Sauer m400s and DPMS. No, I will not recommend a product I know is inferior to the Colt sitting next to it just to make a sale. They keep maybe 10 DPMS and 10 m400s in stock most of the time, but only have about 3 6920's. The other ones they carry are LWRC, and those are pretty damn pricey. It is for sure my favorite LGS because the workers are pretty cool, and they don't price gouge like the other asshats in town ($14/PMAG vs. $35/PMAG YIKES!!)

Whether they're selling widgets or firearms most often employees, at the lower retail level, are going to push/sell what the boss dictates - making the counter guy sounds unprofessional when he promotes poor quality firearms. It's not his fault, he wants to keep his job...

I've also experienced gun store counter guys at the more upscale gun stores who really do know their stuff.

    Why feed the animals?

Im not sure why you expect anything different. You presumably know what ARs and accessories are decent and whats hobby grade so why even bother mentioning? I don't understand this behavior. Id rather merrily go about buying what I know I need and be friendly with the staff as opposed to get into pissing matches about who knows best. Its not like after you leave they all look at each other and thank the heavens you took time from your busy schedule to enlighten them. Besides, if you establish the reputation of not being a dickhead you might get better treatment at the register. Just saying.

Very true. I work for a welding supply company and I get guys that come in all the time and want to butt heads on all the reasons they think red is better than blue and how they "Know this" And it is really just an annoyance. Most people are just trying to do their jobs so they have money to go out and shoot on the weekends.

It's a business. Plain and simple.

Gun stores, or any store for that matter, is gonna carry what SELLS.

Its not the stores fault that countless mis-informed, stubborn people prefer to go cheap on a rifle so they can afford a cheap optic and ammo for under 1k.

I learned this a couple years ago when a friend that works at a gun store was always ordering and selling SHIT.

At first I was like "WHY!!" It's NOT GOOD! Until I seen how many sub par products he sold.

It wasn't his fault. It's the idiots that buy it.

What do you all think about the current state of affairs of gun magazine reviews of questionable ARs and the misinformed gun store employees who are singing the virtues of Bushmaster, Del-Ton, et al.?
There are more than a few gun magazine writers who have no clue what they're evaluating.

I've never seen ONE negative review of an item. That's definitely a clue. I remember flipping through one once that bragged about the moa accuracy of an olympic ar at 25 meters with an acog.

I don't know if I would call them idiots. In my neck of the woods unemployment is still high and wages are not that great when you can find a job. There are many folks trying to put food on the table to feed families. I know several of these folks and they love to shoot, but purchasing a top of the line AR is out of the question. I see a benefit from the lower tier makers. They put AR's in the hands of those who would otherwise just give up and not get involved in shooting. This would hurt us all. When things improve they can update their equipment. Been there, done that.

Wanted to post this in the "dumbest thing heard in a gun shop" thread, but I'm not grown up enough (not enough posts).

I've been in the market for an M1 Carbine lately and I had been told of a LGS that gets them in occasionally, so I stopped in to check the other day.

    I walk in the door...

Salesman: "Can I help you find anything?"

Me: "Yeah, I'm looking for an M1 Carbine."

    Salesman: "What caliber?"

[An odd question, but I know that there are some .22 LR replicas]

    Me: ".30 Cal."

Salesman: "Right this way." [Picks up a Ruger Mini-14]

    Me: "Sorry, a .30 Carbine?"

Salesman: [Looking around] "I'm not sure if we have any Mini-30s in stock."

Me: [Maybe he misheard? Slowly and clearly now...] "No, I'm looking for an M1 Carbine."

Salesman: "Oh, an M1!" [Walks down the line and grabs a Springfield M1A]

Me: [Wait a minute, are you serious?] "Not an M1A, I'm looking for an M1 .30 Carbine... Like an Inland, maybe?"

Salesman: [Looks perplexed, points to an M1 Garand] "Here you go, M1, .30 caliber. I don't know a lot about the different brands, so I'll just go down the line and read the price tags." [Yes, he actually said this sentence.]

    Me: "Nevermind. Thank you."

Eh, you'll probably have experiences like this at 80% of gun shops. Most people aren't privy to the sweet new tacticoolness of Noveske and KAC, so I decided I wouldn't let that ruin my day
