not to hijack but JSantoro is spot on......Tim (TOrrock / Templar) a former moderator on this forum is indeed a living/breathing encyclopedia of firearms knowledge.
he used to work @ DeGoff's in Mechanicsville, VA when i first met him nearly 15 years ago.
solid guy who won't BS you. it doesn't hurt that he's the assistant retail manager.......as a result, he stocks nothing but the best.
they're a Class III dealer too......he sold me my LMT MRP 10.5.....bastard.
how DARE he make me part with 1800.00 !!!!
my old man's got a TiRant pending up there too.
I guess its all LGS employees around here... And ALL is a tall order as well, I guess the 95% factor of employees and idiot customers (which I mention in my OP) is more accurate in my own mind. I'm sure you and others fall into the 5%.
I honestly only go to LGS to kill time and laugh to myself.

Actually had a good experience the other day. Went into Sportsman's Warehouse to look for 5.56 and some 12ga buckshot. Couldn't resist going to the back corner where they have all the ARs and accessories. I saw the sales guy putting an AR on the wall, and asked him if it was indeed the Troy carbine it appeared to be. He said yes and brought it over. I looked at it while we chatted about the "Dick's Sporting Goods fiasco." As we were chatting, another customer came over. He asked about AR's and wanted to see the best selling one. The sales guy pointed to a Bushy. When the customer said, "I guess that's your best quality one?" the clerk, to my surprise answered, "No, the best quality ones don't sell well,, as everyone is going for low price." He then proceeded to point out several Colts, S&W MP15s, and the Troy I was looking at as higher quality rifles, as compared to the Bushys, DPMSs, and Wyndhams in the rack. I was impressed with the guy's honesty. I left before seeing what the other guy purchased, if anything, but will definitely consider them when I shop locally, as opposed to on the 'net.

Mr. Grant, I agree with what you say. I will add one more about customers. Most of the local gunstores here have a crowd that regularly hang out. When you go into the store they all stop talking and turn their attention on you. They try to hear what you are interested in purchasing and try to get in your business-giving their opinion (not asked for) on what you are looking at. I hate this and it is no ones business what I am thinking of buying. If you have a crowd that hangs out at your store they are probably hurting your business-run them off. This is why I stopped going to local gunstores and buy on-line.
lurpygeek,
As you know, your experience is because the sales clerk doesn't know how to listen AND he hasn't the necessary knowledge for what he's selling.
He may be some poor guy whose been laid off and found a job he knows nothing about...still aggravating...
