Don't forget, most homes have 60 or 70 gallons in the Water heater Tank (if you have that style of water heater), you can tap off of that... as long as you cut-off the incoming supply before it's contaminated.

There is no such thing as too much water or too much ammo.

If you've got a well look into deep well hand pumps. Pretty easy to install and provides plenty of water if the power goes out.

Yeah, the one I've got can't go past 350, but at least out where I am on the east coast wells that deep are pretty rare. My well is down to 250 or so but there's water at 95 feet so the hand pump works great.

What will you be using the water for?

If all you are planning on doing is drinking it, then perhaps 1-2 gallons per person per day can suffice. If you have to clean dishes/cookware to eat, that's more water. Fail to clean them, and you'd likely develop some rather fun intestinal maladies that will make you lose liquid at both ends. Dehydration forces you to use up more water.

Do you need to bathe? Again, hygiene is important to prevent illness.

Are you going to refill a commode tank, in order to flush it? Or just have piles of poo drawing flies and spreading more illness?

I'm planning on 6 gallons per person per day. I keep 2 weeks of water on hand in the winter, and double that in the Texas summer.

Having a A class RV w/ a 100 gal fresh water tank...I would think 100 gal would be a good number to aim for. Everybody should have a big blue drum of water on their property as a minimum.

Personally, I keep about (100) gallons properly stored/on hand at all times- rotating it in and out. And LOTS of beer, wine & liquor also.

I also HIGHLY recommend getting a small (1) gallon distiller, carbon filter (Not brita, a real carbon filter and high quality activated carbon- these can be home made quite easily), and a small amount of silver so you can distill, filter, treat and store your own supply over long periods of time if necessary.

With a distiller/filter/silver you could source dirty water to clean in several fashions: dig a hole (In the right region/place) and distill/filter the ground water, or repurpose your urine and distill/filter it, collect rain water and distill/filter, ETC...

Just about any source of "dirty" water can be made ptoable by distillation, carbon filtering and silver treatment.

I also have an RO filter. But proper Carbon filtering after distillation is typically good enough.

I keep a separate supply of water for hygiene & cleaning. About (20) gallons that can also be re-used.

Both of my properties have natural water sources (A well at one, and a canal/irrigation ditch at the other), so in case SHTF I would want my in-door stored water to be used first while things might not be so firendly outside, and then I would go after the outdoor sources.

A big blue barrel is a good idea for everyone so you can collect rain water to be treated.

I also have (2) of those bathtub bladders so when the SHTF you can fill them up (Approx 100 gallons per bladder) before the municipal source is dried up and leave them in place to use over time.

Moose was correct, you can never have enough water- or ammo.
We interrupt this programme to bring you an important news bulletin: the suspect in the Happy Times All-Girl Glee Club slaying has fled the scene and has managed to elude the police. He is armed and dangerous, and has been spotted in the West Side area, armed with a meat cleaver in one hand and his genitals in the other...
