FBI is issuing Hobby Guns to Agents!!??!

The October American Rifleman has an article about the history of FBI long-gun armaments. It claims that regular agents that need rifles are issued Rock River Arms M4geries, in semi auto. (FBI SWAT carries Colt M4 select-fire).

Zounds! Issuing hobby guns to Special Agents? Maybe they don't think they'll actually use them?

Gotta love when cost and opinions override things. Can't tell you how many times I've heard someone say that RRA is top of the line and that they've never heard of DD or BCM.

My brother-in-law swears by them and claims to have beat them to Hell and back with no problems. He tried to talk me into buying one a couple of years ago when I assembled the rifle I have now. It's not an RRA for the record.

The Rock River Arms contract with DOJ is several years old.

One thing to understand is that most people in law enforcement; Federal, State and local; are not gun people. And once you reach a certain level your are a politician and/or a bean counter. The fact that regular Special Agents are being issued RRAs doesn't surprise me. One of our local SWAT teams are issued select fire (3 round) Bushmasters. The reason for their Bushmaster contract was price driven.

In the same article and mention that the HRT teams and the serious trigger pullers are using select fire Colts.

When people ask me the price of an AR, I'll give them the low end price and high end, as you do. When I say the words (high end) usually what is said next is, no joke, "I'm guessing by high end you mean like Bushmaster and Rock River?" It's almost like we're suddenly in preschool and it's turned into opposite day. I don't know when and where, but at some point a lot of people became convinced that these rifles are what the pros use and you're only paying for the name with Colt, DD, and others.

Agents I know have MP5/SF or M4 with sear/selector removed. Same is true for BATFE.

Not all that long ago, you did not the same plethora of high quality choices we have now. There were only so many brands available. What is considered a joke of a rifle by today's m4c standards was the heat back then. Yes I had a Shrubmaster in '96. No shame in my game. I was very young, didn't know any different and couldn't afford a Colt after the ban. I have learned otherwise since then. I think it's important to keep in mind the availability of true quality ARs prior to 2006.

That contract is pushing 10 years old.
