Probably the RRAs will be at best carried / stored a lot and shot little. . In a "good year" I will shoot a issued rifle 300 rnds. I'll clean and/ or lube it more times than shoot it. I shot my muzzle loader at a range more than my duty rifle.
As said most LEOs and Mil. are not in the "know" on firearms and for the most part are not liked or shunned. I would not be surprised if a "fud" shooter has more trigger time at clods and cans than average special agents duty rifle, not a knock on them just not the main focus of their job.
The lowest bidder/ best connected (kickback ? ) wins bids in a lot of cases. . M9 pistol comes to mind (Mil. Bases in Italy?)

Our local Sheriff's department and PD both are issued select-fire RRA. SD has 14.5" and PD has 10.5" SBRs. I would guess it's a budget issue as my town has a population of about 1400. I should probably be wondering why our rural town's LEOs are so militarized...

This has actually been the subject of a few discussions here. Rural LEOs are in less dense environments and actually more likely to need to (and be able to) safely engage targets at longer distances. How many 100 yard sight lines without potential collateral damage do you think exist in downtown Seattle? What about 30 miles outside of Seattle in rural North Bend, WA in the foothills of the cascades?

IMO, civilian LEOs have no valid reason to have FA weapons. A possible exception being DEA entry teams.

I think, particularly when it comes to the receiver extension, they don't stake guns for commercial sales because they know so many end users are going to mess with, modify, and upgrade their guns. They figure why bother staking it in place when Joe AR15 is just going to tear it off to add a single point sling plate or something like that.

As for the gas key I have no idea why some manufacturers don't address that.

I have inspected several hundred ARs over the last four years and I have never seen one with an unstaked gas key.

I've got some great stories of altered weapons in federal testing programs as well. It shouldn't be that way, but it is. Selling guns is big business.
Yep. Anybody shocked at this needs to go learn how the .gov procurement and contracting process works.

Somebody up in the food chain writes some requirements, which may or may not be based on what the end user actually needs.

The potential suppliers submit their wares for evaluation and the items are tested.

Then .gov puts 10 or 15 guys in a room to evaluate the data packages, conducting trade studies to see which products meet the requirements.

Recently .gov has been pushing what they call "low cost technically acceptable" contracts which include "low cost" as a requirement with no consideration for higher performance. They determine which products meet the minimum specification and then they pick the cheapest. More than likely that's how you get an RRA as a duty weapon...

I think the thought is that they arent going to war with them, these guns are not going to be shot full auto for hours and days on end.
They arent in the field for weeks or months, they are hopefully going home after 8-12 hours.Gunfights in the civi.world dont normally last long at all.Last i checked the FBI stats are normally 3 shot at 3 feet thats 3 shots from both shooters combined..

A local gun shop said a local municipality will never buy RRA ever again after they had a bolt carrier issue when training. They apparently won't trust their lives to RRA after that incident.

I'm not calling you a liar by any means, but I think I would take anything heard over the counter of a gun shop with a gain of salt.
