I highly doubt anyone could begin to accurately predict this number. Some people have multiple AR's. I have more than 4. I also have several associates locally that have 4 or more. One of them has 10 different models and types.

Then we take into account all of the stripped lowers that have been produced and then built into functional weapons.

Then take into account all of the AR's produced since around the mid-60's and sold onto the civilian market in addition to those that have been sold during the AWB and then afterwards.

Yep, didn't own any prior to 2008, now between my wife and I, more than 5! I think they breed in the safe.

    1. Thinking of groups of people I can estimate a group of 175 people - neighbors, fellow workers, kin, etc. Of these 175 people I know 3 who own ARs (including me). My conversion factor is then, 0.017 AR/person.

    2. There are about 300,000,000 people in the US.
    300,000,000people X 0.017AR/person = 5,000,000ARs
All of your AR friends only own 1 AR each...that's a flawed formula right there!!

    In 2009, 500,000 AR15s and 100,000 AKs were manufactured / imported.

In the past year, three of my immediate neighbors bought one AR each and I bought two.

I think 5million is still a low estimate. If I were to speculate, I'd say its around 6-10million.

Bourdain drew some heat for dissing some of the local cuisine. No problem. At least he didn't seem to be too out of touch with the locals that he couldn't enjoy firing a nice weapon. Regarding AR firearms in the US, I now have 7. Considering they've been available for civilian purchase since the 1960s, I was guessing around 7 million +.

Hear you go http://www.atf.gov/files/statistics/...ort-report.pdf start digging There are several AR only manufacturers on that list. Lower manufacturers are listed too. I've never seen a complete Aero Precision rifle and they are listed as making over 39,000 "rifles"...that number has to be lowers.
