Colt is not the measuring stick for progress. Up until just a few years ago they refused to even discuss or do barrel stuff in class. In the last Colt course I went to (last summer) we spent less than 30 minutes discussing barrel changes.

I have honestly done probably close to a thousand barrel changes or installs of over the years and the Reaction Rod makes not only that task easy, but when combined with the installation of muzzle devices and rails, it's a no brainer. YMMV

And yes I know putting on flash hiders/comps do not require much torque but until I have a reaction rod in hand and actually use it I'll stick with the right tool for the job. I'll just tell Colt and Remington to quit teaching and using these vice jaws in their Ar-15 Armorers classes.

I used to use these as well and found them sufficient for Billet UR's although they were homemade.

I got a reaction rod coming so I will see what all the hype is about. Everyone does things differently and the jaws work great for flash/comp changes. Who knows I may like the RR better and get rid of the jaws.

I have tried the blocks, the clamp, the clam shell with the insert. All are inferior compared to a product like Geissele's Reaction Rod. Can not remember who is making it, but there is a model available that works for 5.56 and .308 uppers.

Darn true statement.........my barrel clamp blocks have been stashed away on a shelf lately.

I've only built four uppers so far and I don't know how many I will be building in the future so I don't see me buying a reaction rod. Although I would love to have one, looks like the ideal tool for the job.

If you choose to get the Brownells product (I own one myself) be aware that it does not have flats milled into the sides.

I had to do that bit of machining myself.

With the Brownells rod, I insert a 1/2" breaker bar into the end, and clamp the vertically positioned bb into the vise. Believe that is why they have the 1/2" square hole in the Brownell unit, for a torque wrench or a breaker bar.

Perhaps not as "clean" as clamping the RR in the vise, but it works well for me.
