I just bought my first pistol...

Can I send my "Pistol Sales Record" to my local police department or does it need to go somewhere special?

When I purchased the pistol I was given two copies of the pistol sales record and was told to send one of them in to the Michigan State Police Department.

I usually take mine to my local sherrif's office, and they forward it to the state police.

That's a thing? Doesn't the FFL do that? And I'm in the worst gun state in the country.

Nope, the laws have changed (relaxed) over the last year or two (no longer need to go to the sherrif's dept. for a pistol purchase permit), but yes.

I read that I no longer needed a permit to purchase a firearm but do have to mail in the sales record.

I believe that is correct, when the purchase permit stopped being required, you basically just skip the 1st trip to the sherrif's dept (you fill out the exact same paperwork at the point of purchase)...

However I have to say that if you feel unclear about what to do, you should consult your favorite knowledgeable ffl, or local sherrif dept to make sure you are fully covered where your obligations are concerned. I am not a legal authority ofany sort.
