Stoeger shotguns like the 3500 are inertia drivin but cost half what a Benelli does. I owned one and it was a skeet slayer. I wouldnt own an automatic if it didnt have the inertia driven operating system. 1100's and 1187's can be finicky with light target loads.

How is the recoil impulse? Im looking for my soon to be 14 year old son. He has been practicing with a Beretta AL391 20ga youth and is just about ready to transition to a 12ga. As much as I want to get him a 391, its the price that is killing me. I'd like to get him something that he can start competing with while I save up for a better shotgun for him. The reason for that is if he has to keep practicing with out competing he is going to lose his interest.

It's one of the lighter kicking shotguns I have tried. I was pleasantly surprised. I spent a day shooting Kent Fast Upland loads with no adverse effects last weekend. I'm in love with mine. The chrome lined bore is a big plus in my mind. I don't baby my guns.

Any reason he can't compete with the 20ga? A good amount of skeet shooters don't shoot 12ga anymore, they use 20ga in all the 12ga events.

OP- I have been shooting competetive skeet for 26 years the 1100/1187 and Beretta 391 are by far the most common semi autos you will see. Neither one really has an advantage as far as skeet shooting is concerned, it is personal preferance for the most part.

I personally like the Remington's due to weight (steel vs aluminum recievers), and have had no issues with reliability. My personal 12ga 1100 is closing in on 50,000 rounds without any serious issues. Keep an eye on the wear parts and replace as necessary and keep it clean and lightly lubed and it should be a reliable clay target gun for many years and lots of rounds.

The same can be said for the Beretta's I have seen many thousands of rounds through them without any significant issues.

The amount of other brand semi autos I have seen on the competition range in that time could probably be counted on both hands. There are lots of other serviceable semi auto shotguns out there but you just dont see many on the skeet fields.

    Hope this helps.

Horsepuckey. Just because you read something on the internet, doesn't make it true.

There are plenty of shooters that put 10-20x that amount in a single year on an 1100.

If I had money to spend on a brand new semi shotgun I'd go with either a Versamax or Beretta.

Good question. The only answer I have is that his coaches all want him to use 12ga, saying that in the end he will be a better shooter for it. My ignorance when it comes to shotguns is only outdone by me ignorance of women. For now I am looking to get him something that will mitigate the recoil impulse as best can be done until he is ready to move into an O/U. Also if I am going to invest in his own gun for competition I'd like to be as economical as I can for now. Oh he is 5'2-1/2" and weighs about 105.

I have a Beretta Explor A400 12 Ga. Gas operated with a fairly unique spring combination in the stock to help reduce impact on the shoulder. It's not a competitive skeet gun (mostly you will see over/unders in skeet) but it's a great all around 12 GA and I just got finished hunting Pheasant in SD last week with it. Only holds 3 shells is it's only downfall. It kicks more like a 28 ga than a 12 ga....

My Dad shoots this shotgun also - he has a PACEMAKER and had to have something that didn't kick so hard. For your wife, if she can fit it, this might be a great gun for her...

What is he shooting Trap, Skeet, Sporting clays? 12ga making him a better shooter I'm not so sure. Hell, I started with an 1100 in 28ga. for skeet. In my experience the only thing 12ga has that 20 dosen't is more recoil and 1/8oz more shot.

As for the recoil mitigation, get him the heaviest gun he can handle and a good recoil pad. Limb saver or kickeez seem to be the best/most popular.

A friend just picked up a Benelli Montefeltro used for not much more than your price range, and boy is that a fine shooting gun. One of these days I'm gonna get an inertia driven Benelli.
