That one has been a regular re-list for quite some time, as I recall.

Honestly cannot even begin to imagine what drove the offending smith to do that ("fish scales?") to the gun, unless perhaps it was heavily-damaged and this was just an attempt to work around the problem. Even so, a re-weld and re-cut would have been infinitely-preferable. This particular example is utterly-garish. I suspect someone considered it high-art, too ... that's the real head-scratcher.

There are definitely some ugly, botch-job 1911s out there, though. Pretty much any listing that includes the word "custom" along with a name that you've never heard of causes me to hear the not-so-distance whistle of an impending train wreck. Half of them seem to be home garage conversions that probably used to be really nice guns.

Little wonder that unmolested pre-series 70s and such are beginning to command well over the usual $800-900 base gun prices that were once the norm. Was watching them last week, and $1,200 seems to be as low as anyone is ever going to find one now.

Here ... this should help you forget all about what you just saw: http://www.flickr.com/photos/67889104@N02/9705382757/

    Much better, no?

I too have seen that one floating around the interwebs. Just sickening.

There was a original unmolosted Colt series 70 posted for sale on this forum not too long ago that went for 750 bucks. If I had had the extra cash on hand I would have bought it, someone here got a good deal. I have two reproduction colt series 70's that I patiently waiting for MARS to start excepting work again..

ETA: Found the original sales thread. Even has the preferred "G" in the serial number.

    WTF.

Looks like the serrations were chewed on it by Shrek. And is that an attempt to make the dust cover resemble a BHP???

I would find the guy that butchered that Colt, and beat him like a rented mule. After I was done, some ancient Stasi colonel would mutter "Damn, Serious, he's had enough, let him up......"
