    1. Midlength
    2. 9" rail. My ideal length, across the board, is between 9-10"... and I'd only go 9.5 or 10 when running folding front sights and a light at 12 o'clock.
    3. Pinned Vltor folding FSB

    1. Which operating system do you prefer in a carbine with 16" barrel?
    Midlength

    2. What do you think is the ideal length of rail? Or what length of rail do you prefer?
With FSB at midlength position, I don't even need a rail. If I use one, I'm ok with a standard 9" rail, although the 'cutout' models are nice with a little more flexibility in mounting position for lights.

    3. If you had a choice between an FSB upper or flip sights which would you prefer.
I lean towards FSB even though I have uppers with just flip sights or even none at all. The reliability of Aimpoints kind of makes the robustness of the back up sights less important, but for me Murphy's Law holds true so I still like the FSB and a fixed rear sight.

This is all assuming we're talking about a carbine that isn't trying to serve the role of a precision carbine (that would change my answers completely). My favorite all around carbine is a 16" lightweight middie with magpul handguards. For more specialized purposes I'll pick up something else but that one is the best general purpose carbine I have.

    What I currently have is:

    1. Midlength
    2. 13.5" Noveske NSR and factory pinned low-pro gas block
    3. Magpul MBUS Gen 2

I haven't shot enough different configurations at this point to say that this is what I prefer above all others, but I haven't found it lacking yet either.

    I prefer:

    Carbine gas system
    10"-12" rail system (preferably modular)
    Shaved and pinned gas block

My current sweet spot right now is

    1. Midlength

    2 13.5 Geissele MK4

    3. I currently have a BCM LW barrel and I'm using their low profile gas block with MBUS PRO. I'm leaning towards a Geissele gas block and KAC micros for my next build.

    1. Mid length

    2. 12 inch FF type (just discovered the joys recently)

    3. Last would be a low pro gas block, pinned would be ideal, and flip up sights. Gives the maximum amount of latitude for either RDS or magnified optics.
