IMHO, if you think your AR is too heavy, you should hit the gym and not take some off the rifle, it's counterproductive.
Today is not April 1, correct? So the kitchen sick is cleared for mission?

I can't figure out why my rifle is so heavy with a 10.5" barrel, NSR, surefire mini, and T-1. 9.8 lbs minus sling but with ammo.

lousy pic...but with no mag or sling, 5lbs 15oz according to my digital fish scale

I have another set up exactly the same way and it comes out at 6lbs 1oz.
The only difference between the two carbines seems to be that the first one has a barrel diameter of .570" forward of the FSB and the second is .590". They were purchased almost three years apart, with the .590 one purchased first, in 2010, so I guess BCM put their lightweight barrels on a bit of a diet during that time.

Yes... it's counterproductive when people try to make something already very light, lighter. Take polymer/composite/whatever uppers/lowers, they end up making a perfectly fine weapon system fragile just to save mere ounces, while forged aluminum is very light and very strong.

That's called a slippery slope argument, and it's usually a considered a fallacy.

Going for light weight doesn't necessarily mean cutting corners in quality. Taking an Aimpoint T-1 over an Aimpoint M4, taking a lightweight barrel instead of an HBAR, etc. are good examples of saving weight.

Yes, taking a polymer upper and lower then drilling holes into it to reduce weight would be stupid. But those type of people generally aren't on M4Carbine.

My BCM Mid-16 weighs in unloaded at about 9 lbs 2 oz. Pretty hefty with BFH barrel, Larue 9" handguard, T-1 in Larue mount, Troy/SKD rear BUIS, TD QD stubby VFG, Surefire G2 in VTAC mount, MagPul XT panels, TD PR4 sling mount, VCAS sling, and STR stock. I really like the solid Larue rails, but they are definitely heavy, so the STR balances them out a little. I love the rifle, but I'm going to build a 14.5" when the new BCM rail comes out to try a lighter alternative.

I also don't feel the need to make every single component as light as possible. For example, I look at lighter rails as a way to reduce weight while still retaining the heavy BFH barrel. I don't feel the need to go with a lightweight barrel on top of that. You just have to train and get used to carrying the weight you think is appropriate for you. If it's not comfortable for you, look for other ways to adjust the weight and/or balance.
