    I focused too much on clearing the MBUS, but not actually using it.

    If you don't buy a QD scope mount, there is no point worrying about the MBUS. Iron sights are not usable when looking through a magnified scope, the scope has to be removed quickly with a QD mount. Unfortunately, quality QD mounts cost $$.

    Have you thought about rings instead of a mount/ring combo. Most are available in 2-3 heights. You could do QD rings for less than a standard mount/ring combo. GH

    Yeah that was my last option if I couldn't find the type I wanted

    This is a good point. I'd buy a quality quick-detach mount before I bought back up irons.

    Burris PEPR mounts would work well in that price range. Also look at the various Leupold IMS setups.

    Nikon, Burris, Primary Arms, and Aero all make scope mounts under a hundy. They all have a 1.5" center line so should clear just about all fold down BUIS. If you go with a non-QD you are going to need a wrench, torx, or allen wrench to get it off to use the BUIS. Like another fellow mention, I just stop using irons.
