    Remington 700 accuracy issue

I have been shooting with a guy that started getting heavy into target shooting as of late. He setup his Ruger 10/22 tactical and it shoots under a dime at 50 yards with quality ammo.

Based on this success, he decided that he wanted to get something that would go a little further and picked the Remington 5R Milspec in 223. Right off the bat we struggled to adjust the X Mark Pro trigger and he swapped it for a Jewell. The scope is an older Nightforce Benchrest that I had removed with the rings from a Remington that I had.

We have tried a bunch of different loads in this gun and cannot get it to shoot under 1" at 100 yards, most of them are 1.5" His Knight's SR-15 shoots better with just about anything.

Loads so far are 55 and 62 grain FMJ factory loads, Winchester 69 grain match, and reloads include 60 Sierra HPBT, 69 SMK, and 55 FMJ Hornady bullets. Powders range from Benchmark, Varget, N540, CFE223, and all primers have been either CCI or Remington benchrest primers. Powder was trickled from an RCBS loadmaster scale.

We double checked the torque on the stock and about the only thing not changed is the scope.

Well, I've had three suck-ass Remingtons in a row, so I may be biased...but check the crown first.

yep, i've had a couple rifles like that the past year that absolutely drove me nuts. replaced everything imaginable on them and eventually gave up. it's extremely frustrating. i'd probably dump it and look for a new one rather than spend $500 in ammo and weeks of range time trying to troubleshoot it.

Pin guage the barrel (have a good bolt gun guy do this)... and try 77 gr SMKs. The 3 Rem 700 5Rs we've run have all been excellent. But we did get a pooper in 300 WM that had to be rebarreled.

FWIW... CCI BR primers shot worst of all out of the 5R .223 I loaded for. Wolf the best.

Rather than dealing with Remington, he dropped it off at the gunsmith today to be re-barreled. He really wants the gun to shoot and plans on going the match barrel route.

New barrel- That ought to do it. Sucks when you get a gun that should be a shooter.

What type barrel did he go with? Lotta good barrels to choose from out there. Good lucy to your Pal.

That will be so sweet. They make some of the finest in the world. I bet that gun will shoot like a pellet gun that goes 1,000 yards. If he threads the barrel he can put a comp on the end or possible a can just to make it not budge. Nice choice and again, good luck.

A quick question for you. If I'm looking at a used rifle at some place like Cabela's, is there a method you would recommend to examine a crown?

Maybe a good magnifying glass and a pocket flashlight? I do know a local gunsmith that is well-versed in the operation of a borescope. But I would have to buy the rifle first.

Any tips for the average Joe to keep in mind when he looks at a barrel crown?

I know that building a precision rig is a different ball of wax, but you brought up a good point.

    Thanks.
