I personally suggest the budget style 1911s like the RIA for those thinking of trying a 1911. It's a pistol that you either come to love or hate so dropping a significant amount of money on one up front might not be the best option. And I know about the whole "buy used quality, it's cheaper!" mentality. But sometimes there are just those pistols out there that get sold because they didn't work well and it doesn't matter what name is on the receiver. Sold a 1911 like that myself (with full disclosure) that just didn't work right from day one and the company didn't do anything to help me fix it.

Used Springers and Colts typically run a higher price. And I know you can find better deals in back alley pawn shops if you look hard enough, but sometimes you just don't want to search around and the price point on a Rock Island isn't bad. And overall, they aren't that bad for the price you pay. If money is tight, I have suggested the RIA to folks before and probably will continue to.
Experience is a cruel teacher, gives the exam first and then the lesson.

I would much rather invest 5-600 dollars in a Springfield Mil-Spec or used G.I. and learn to build my own 1911. If someone is passionate about the 1911 and has the time, this would be a very valuable way to learn, slowly and carefully, how the 1911 operates and is built. However, my goals may be different than yours OP, either: A) filling my noggin with more information about the 1911 or B) a base gun that can be turned into something that is more functional when it comes to a SD/carry role (and complete it over time as funds open up).

If you are looking for a 'just another gun' to shoot at the range, an RIA will serve you well.

Those are my views, at the very least.

Building a 1911 is nothing like an AR15. I don't think you could do it on your own as a first 1911. It's probably a lot easier to get something like an STI spartan or Trojan and then modify to suit. You'll learn on this one the beginning of what you'd need to know to build one (or more likely, lean that building a 1911 for the first time is going to take like a year).

So, my recommendation is to skip the RIA suggestions, and get an STI Spartan if it's cheap enough. If you have a little more dough, get a Trojan, which comes with a better (US made) frame.

If you are hell bent on building one, then go look up Remsport Arms, and get a slide/frame setup (he'll fit them for you). Then start reading of barrel fitting, and all of the expensive tools you'll need to make that work.

    Opinions? (Budget 1911 Recommendation)

Some of you folks suggesting he nearly double his budget need to listen more and talk less, unless you have owned one of the products listed. I see several OWNERS of the RIA, with experience recommending them as a perfectly suitable platform for the low price.

He is not asking what you would do, he is asking which of the two products, he can afford, should he buy?

If i could afford to replace the colt delta i had i would do so. just looking to have a 1911 again for now. The leo agency i work for will not allow the carry of a 1911 unless you are swat, so it will not be a carry gun, just something to shoot at the range. If it was going to be a carry gun i'd save up for a springfield, colt, or maybe a sig. Even seen a couple of para ord's i liked the look of

I have owned both with mixed results and can't in all honesty recommend either as much more than a range gun. I have owned two Rock Islands. One was a basic GI model that would feed ball, but no HP. The second was a tactical that I had high hopes for, but it had FTF/FTE issues. To RIA's credit, they replaced that one no questions asked. I sold it at a loss with a full disclosure to the buyer. The PT-1911 was abysmal. On the first trip to the range the ambi-safety broke and when the slide locked home the barrel link pin broke. It was locked up tight in the slide closed position. I sent it back to Taurus and after about a ten month turn-around they sent another pistol back. I ended up selling that one too at a loss, with full disclosure of course.

After reading the last post by the OP and his intended purpose I would recommend the RIA over the Taurus. This is JMHO. You will have to let us know what you get and how you like it after you decide.

If both companies replaced the faulty pistols with new ones, what exactly were you disclosing?

Probably that the replacements, too, were made out of junk parts.

The one I suggested, the STI Spartan, uses the same Phillipino frame as the RIA 1911s, however, the rest of the parts are the usual good quality stuff that STI uses on their high end models.

STI has great customer service, as well.

    (No affiliation with STI, BTW).

I've owned 1 RIA GI model, it was less than reliable. No experience with any other 1911's except a kimber which is no budget pistol. Good luck.

I have a kimber. They aren't 100% reliable out if the box.

The extractors don't hold tension, some clock, the ultra models come with the wrong wolff springs. There are other things I don't like, but those two are the reliability issues.

I got mine where I like it, but it would have been a lot cheaper getting there if I had started out with the Trojan or Ranger.
