    I just cant believe that a multi vitamin could ever be bad for you. I do agree with what Vic303 posted in that if your body has enough of a certain portion of what is in the multi vitamin you just piss it away, but that doesnt mean that your body doesnt need the rest of whats in it.

    What I have read(and perhaps Will Brink can talk on this) is that not all multi vitamins are built the same and MOST of the commercially available ones are of poor quality for what they are.

    I think the idea is that most people get the vitamins they need normally. Taking a multi-vitamin would theoretically help if you were starved for nutrition, but as this is AMERICA and even poor people are fat, they don't do a whole lot besides waste money.

    Yeah, but are those fat people really getting all the vitamins they need? Probably not.

    Think about it...many overweight people eat tons of processed foods and fried fast foods high in salt and preservatives. Those foods have lots of calories and sodium but not much in the way of vitamins.

    I do think many of the lower cost multi-vitamins (like the ones for 10 bucks a bottle at Wal Mart) are probably worthless. The ones you pay more for at GNC or Vitamin Shoppe are probably better.

    Also, you probably need more nutrients from multis if you work out heavily or run versus those with more sedimentary lifestyles.

    Yes, I would bet you DO wind up peeing out what you do not need but you probably use some of what the better multi-vitamins have to offer.

    I once had a doctor tell me ALL of the vitamins you buy at health stores are garbage but that doctor worked for a "wellness center" and wanted to sell me THEIR vitamins so I took it with a grain of salt.

    IMHO, there's a segment of the population that needs vitamin supplementation, but vitamins are largely the province of companies taking advantage of the gullibility of the American public. Furthermore, their largely unregulated nature makes them a prime target for less-than-optimal compounding, let alone reasonable bioavailability. I've always suspected that dedicated vitamin-users are also big proponents of automotive oil and gasoline additives for their car.

    Except for fat soluble vitamins....specifically A, D, E, and K. They accumulate.

    While CNN may be the latest to be reporting studies on the efficacy of multivitamins, there have been a number of similar studies with more or less the same conclusions in just the past five years alone.

    The article has a big caveat, healthy people eating a balanced diet. I take a daily acid blocker and that has shown to lower the ability to absorb B12, so I'll continue to take a multi-vitamin a few times a week at night since I take my Prilosec in the morning.

    Big Pharmaceuticals been saying vitamins are worthless for years because there is little money in them.
