You would think that, with modern CNC and other current methods, manufacturing would be better and more consistent than before. Looks like that's not the case.

I wasn't going to comment since I haven't used a P, but I'm pretty disappointed in mt 870. Its an express, bought about 2 years ago. I have maybe 100 rounds through it and it locks up or doesn't extract fully all the time. I don't think I've gone 5 rounds without a problem. I took it to a local gunsmith but wish I had just gotten a Mossberg - the only reason I chose Remington was because I liked their tactical configuration.
Sic semper tyrannis.
Have an older 870 & love it, friend of mine had a newer one with that symptom of not extracting, he swapped the barrel & the problem went away. The chamber looked & felt fine but it had to be the cause.
I don't think it's necessarily the workers on the line that are responsible. I'm more inclined to blame management that set up the manufacturing, tooling, and parts process, and designed the QA. IMHO, corporate owners cutting it too close to the bone is more often responsible than indifferent workers. When maximizing profits is more important than a quality product, quality suffers.
Poor quality assurance is a relatively common complaint with Remington these days. Same is true of Bushmaster and DPMS, and cruising the Marlin forums indicates a huge degree of dissatisfaction with Marlin quality, which was once really good. These companies went downhill IMHO at the corporate direction of Cerberus/Freedom group.
Maybe I'm the only one...but in the last two years I've had:
2 Remington 870's
1 Kimber
5 Sig P226's
8 Glocks
4 HK's
1 Rem 700
1 Daniel Defense AR
3 Mossberg 500's
Every single damn one of these has functioned perfectly with NO problems. Except the Daniel Defense. Had tremendous extraction problems.
I have no idea why people think most of these firearms has "serious QC problems"
There are always exceptions. That being said, what're your round counts like?

Makes me a little apprehensive. I've got an 870P on order, so I guess we'll see.
I wouldn't worry about it in the slightest. Remington has made the 870 for over 60 years and in that time over 10 million have come out of Ilion. The Police model is different from the Express in the amount of inspections, etc. they undergo. There are obvious quality differences in my opinion. Blindfolded you can tell the difference. But that is mostly from using different springs in the P model. Yours will be fine.
I bought my 870 back in October, it should almost 1,000 rounds through it.
1. The factory paint SUCKS, and it rusted instantly, pretty much. So I painted it with header paint, and the problem went away.
2. The forearm gets ridiculously loose. Maybe I am doing something wrong when I tighten the nut down? I do not know, however, I do not think it should get that loose.
I have not experienced extraction issues, it runs flawlessly.
I have replaced the mag follower, spring, and extractor on mine, though.
- cqbdriverIt is from the construction of underground FEMA camps. I can't say more because there a guy parked in front of house in an AMC Pacer. He is acting like he talking on the phone, but I know better.
I have to sign off now & put my laptop in the microwave.
