I got lucky and found a case available at ammoman.com a few years ago. They haven't had any since that time.

    1) Flite Control #1
    2) Flite Control 00 8-pellet
    3) Flite Control 00 9-pellet

Of the various walmart buckshot, I have found that in my gun, Remington reduced recoil 00 9-pellet patterns best. Rio Royal 00 also patterns decent. Federal reduced recoil buck is ok. Winchester and S&B pattern the worst for me.

I would start by measuring the longest distance in your house that you would make a shot. Buy a box of some of the brands mentioned. Go to the range and set up targets at several distances out to your maximum distance. Then you'll know what the pattern is at each distance. 15 yards is the longest distance in my house. With Hornady TAP 8 shot 00 buck low recoil and Federal LE13200 9 shot and LE13300 8 shot 00 buck low recoil rounds I get 4"-5" groups out of my 870 Express 18.5" cyl bore barrel. I like the concentration of tight patterns in the home defense roll. Less chance of strays going where they shouldn't.

For HD inside the longest continous distance inside my house is about 7 yards. I have patterned 5 rounds of Federal LE132 #1 buckshot. I forgot my phone so I took the target home and took the picture:

I have also patterned my 18" SLP using Federal Vital Shok PFC154 9 pellet 00 buckshot. I put the target out at 10 yards. The first shot was not mine as I had guy ask if he could shoot my SLP and it went into the head. The center mass ones were mine.

    Federal LE1321B..
Our dept purchased some from gtdist.com when it first came out. I do not know if they cover it or not. It is really hard to find. I loved it so much I bought 250 rds for myself. Very light recoil and patterns great out of my 870. If I could not find this I would look at the Federal 00 Low Recoil. To me low recoil is a must in a pump gun. The difference in recoil is very noticeable at least to me. Also penetration is going to be slightly smaller since velocity is about 300 FPS slower.
AS far as slugs I use Federal either the Tru Ball or Hydra Shok. The Hydra shok is a little more accurate from my 870 but the Tru Ball penetrates better.
A buddy of mine gave me 100 rds of the Brenneke THD loads which are supposed to be designed so the wad does not seperate from the slug so you do not have to worry about hitting something other than target I have not had a chance to try these yet but they seem promising.

Damn nice slug. I bought and shot them through my Mossberg 500 18". I only shot to 25 yards and they held to only a few inches off hand. I really like that it has no wad.

Since my HD shotgun is a Remington 11-87P, any full power buckshot ( 00 or 1 ) or slug from Federal, Remington, Winchester, or Hornady will do fine. The Remington 11-87P doesn't like reduced recoil loads.

    SLUG
    1. Federal Truball Deep Penetrator Rifled Slug (LEB127 DPRS)
    2. Brenneke Tactical Home Defense

    BUCK
    1. Federal Premium LE 12ga, Low Recoil, 1 Buck (LE132-1B )
    2. Federal Premium LE 12ga, Low Recoil, 00 Buck (LE132-00)

Pretty much what Doc recommends, I think.
