OK, the fact that one round was sticking up in the air after you tried to insert it indicates the rounds were not loaded in the mag properly.

Are you storing the mags loaded? If so, then using the dust cover helps, as soarin has stated.

If not, then it's simply a matter of checking before insertion.

    Update

Just rechecked the three mags and they seem to be working fine when I make sure they are loaded to 28 or less. Since I can repeat the issue but still get the mags to seat without slapping them in I will just leave it as is and alter my loading technique. Thanks to Soarin, and Eric D. for the tips, guess I'll need to be 20% more attentive when inserting my mags.

Nah, I never store my mags loaded since it'd freak my housemates out if they saw it. They're just warming up to the idea of living with an AR15 and it's baby steps from there.

    Well, you're good to go.

I will reiterate that there's no need to download 30 round Pmags to 28 rounds (or 20 rounders to 18), despite what your ROK friend told you. That downloading issue arose in Vietnam in the '60s and continued through the '70s when there were multiple problems surrounding the M-16, including ammo (powder), cleaning/lubing procedures, and mags. We had some steel mags at one point (the crosshatched version) that couldn't be counted on to feed at all! The ROKs were there and they used our stuff. But, it's all been fixed or the AR platform wouldn't even be around now, much less as popular as it is.

Dude, he was specifically referring to the K1, not an AR, and he said that they always loaded their STANAGs to 25. I'm pretty sure I don't need to download to 25. He's no former UDT but he's still a pal of mine who likes things that go boom. I will admit that I might just be superstitious in my belief to not put the extra 2 rounds in the mag.

    Yeah.

This happens to me all the time with PMAGs, I can't stand it.

I use PMAGs for the range and stock NHMTGs for serious use.

Thanks for the help though, I'll try out loading my PMAGs to 30 and seeing how well it works for me.

Have you experienced this issue with pmags? Its not a matter of improperly loading the rounds.

Some people down-load usgi mags for easier seating but the general consensus is that pmags can be loaded to a full 30. For me, the second round popping up doesn't prevent the mag from seating either, it just takes more forces to seat it. Reliable feeding is not affected. I've dealt with it well by acknowledging the issue and modifying my technique as well.

It's like they get "caught" and just need to be pushed again to seat. When I'm aware of this it doesn't seem to pose much of a problem. Thanks to everyone for helping me out with this issue.
