I chose the AR and SCAR platforms as the two I would use and keep spares for. KAC, HK and others make good rifles, but have too many proprietary parts and tools.
I agree. SCAR is the way to go. You can use regular ar bolts, pistons, op rods etc. Very common platform with plenty of cheap available support from colt, bcm, Daniel defense, etc.

IMO FN dropped the ball on the SCAR bolt by not using radiused lugs like KAC's bolt.

I do not think KAC is too worried about "potential customers" from the non MIL/LE market.
If you like their products and want to have a few spare parts and tools, it will cost a bit.
On the other hand, how many people have actually worn a KAC bolt out?

Sorry that I didn't see this sooner. As you found out, the E3 barrel extension will not accept a Geissele RR. The KAC tool is comparably priced and works as advertised. The SR15 flash hider is attached with a standard crush washer, so no big deal to swap out.

This makes absolutely zero sense. Since when is anything on the SCAR not proprietary? If you were talking about some of the fly by night piston designs that have come and gone over the last few years or LWRC, whose design is constantly changing, I might agree. However, the E3 design hasn't changed since it's introduction several years ago and KAC isn't going anywhere, so spares will be available in the highly unlikely scenario that you break a bolt. And if you break one inside of 20K rounds, they will replace it under warranty. Who else will do that? No one. I'm not sure that I'd recommend any gun with proprietary parts as your ONLY AR, but I have no qualms with owning a KAC due to the stability of the company and the E3 design.

Someone please help the dumb guy in the room, me, as to why you need a tool such as the reaction rod...
How were folks removing muzzle devices before? Is this a must or a nice thing to have? What am I missing here?

The correct way to swap a muzzle device is to fix the barrel in position. The RR allows you to do that when there isn't enough barrel exposed to allow the use of a vise. It has a lot of other uses as well for general armorer work.

I understands it fixes everything in place, but how did armorers do this before the RR?

Different ways, this one is simply a better option.
