    Problem with LMT 10.5"

My friend has a problem with his LMT 10.5" we just built. It will either fail to feed a round off the magazine or partially feed one, resulting in a jam, about every other round. It seems to do so only when feeding rounds from the right side of the magazine. I've tried it with USGI and Pmags and the results were the same. It also fails to lock back on an empty mag.

He is running a LMT 10.5" upper with LMT M16 BCG, A2 FH, MilSpec M4 buffer tube, stock buffer spring, and H buffer.

We were at the range and I took apart the buffer and removed the tungsten weight. We ran it with just the two steel weights and the problem was the same.

I'm guessing that LMT's are under-gassed. I built a 14.5" using an LMT upper for another friend and his would only run with a carbine buffer on an M16 BCG.

I'm thinking of getting a Wolff reduced power buffer spring for my friend's 10.5" and a standard carbine buffer. I'm hoping that will fix the problem. I'm also considering removing all the weights from his buffer and seeing if it will work with the stock spring and super-light buffer.

Is this a common problem with LMT uppers?

I built myself an 11.5" with a Sabre Defense barrel, A2 FH, on a CMT upper, LMT M16 BCG and it runs like a clock with a standard spring and H3 buffer.

This has happened to me two different times, both times it was due to wolf ammo. What kind of ammo were you using?

Sounds like a short stroking scenario.

Like F2F & Johnson mentioned, what ammo are you using? If you are using regular decenty ammo, try switching the H2 out for a standard buffer.

I wouldn't exactly call them "undergassed" but LMT does drill their gas ports smaller than some other manufacturers. Grant and a few other dealers have clearly stated that this is due to them being designed to run on NATO-spec 5.56 ammo and not commercial stuff. But certain LMT uppers seem to handle SAAMI-spec ammo better than others, as I've seen some run okay on it and some choke horribly. I only have a statistical sample of about eight or so to base that on, though.

I will echo the previous comments and inquire what ammo was being used.

You said that you yourself built it.

Asking if a particular malfunction or condition is common for factory LMT uppers as compared to the one that you put together is not really a legit question.

Is it possible, since you said you all built it, that you have the gas tube upside down in the FSB?

So if I were buying an LMT 10.5" upper to make a civi MK18, would my best bet would be to buy it from someone who would drill out the gas port if I want an SBR that runs as well with the same variety of ammo as my 16"?

    thanks

Your best bet is to take it home and shoot it. If there are any issues that need to be addressed then, address them then. Issues with LMT's are the exception, not the rule.
