My Colt M4 has a green laser and an EOTech, and it's a great rifle, all souped up and awesome...but it's not my SHTF rifle. Plus, I just prefer a rifle that requires a bit less maint.

When the spam hits the fan, I want as little tying me down as possible. (gizmos, batteries, cords and stuff that might get in my way)

Iron sights for me, no question, on my Galil. (not Golani)

For SHTF purposes, I'm more interested in things close than things far away. My choice was an A'point Pro with backup irons. Sight pictures are acquired fast and vision is minimally impaired when using it.

To each their own, but as RogerinTPA pointed out, the minimum that most should accept would be a sling, RDS, BUIS and a light. You don't HAVE to have a pressure switch for a light so eliminate the need for a wire. The batteries for an RDS, if fresh, will probably last longer than most imagine especially in the Aimpoint types. The BUIS can fold down out of the way and a sling is, well a sling.

With the advent of storage compartments in a lot of the accessories (stocks, foregrips, pistol grips, etc) these days, carrying spare batteries is not exactly an imposition and offers a quick change if needed. And with removable 1913 rails and Keymod types of handguards, the front end becomes even more snag proof than the older designs of the full rails.

I don't know how much more "maintenance intensive" an AR will be in reference to a Galil. But at the same time, mags are way more expensive, parts are hard to come by and fixing things that are broken on said Galil?

    To each their own though.

I use an EOTech and AIM Point Pro for both my ARs. I like the AImpoint better for simplicity. Although, our S.T.A.R.T. (SWAT) perimeter guys use Trijicon 1-4 powered scopes. I like them as well.

On my 12.5 upper I have an Aimpoint RDS and fixed irons with a lower 1/3 cowitness.

My 11.5 has Troy BUIS and a T1 2MOA. Of course, I could not fully settle on one optic, so I also have a Short Dot in a Larue mount zeroed for this upper as well. Game time decision.
