Vortex 1x6 hd 2 with red dot in the middle. Back up irons in case it goes down. Considering how well built the gen 11's are, I doubt it would happen but you never know.

Defensive use a firearm is rarely a marksmanship problem, but it is ALWAYS a mindset problem.

If an EMP hits the last thing any of us will worry about is our sights going out.

I know they are seen as old school now but when the electricity is out and we are thrown back 100 years that Acog will be the best technology we have. But the majority will be forced to use irons. Any other type of shtf ordeal all optics will give you an advantage over the zombies.

Enough of the "who's coming for our shit" stuff. We've discussed this many times and ways.

I actually asked an Aimpoint guy about EMP. I had them on the phone for some other reason, and decided..."why not?"
Their take on it was that since EMP operates by "hitting wires/"receivers" of conduction", the Aimpoint would be fine. #1 because it is possible that parts of it will act as a faraday cage, and #2 because the surface area of the wires/"receivers" in the optic are so small that an EMP would not be likely to impact them with enough electrons/photos/whatever to overload them. Also, there isn't much to actually overload in an Aimpoint...what are you overloading? There are no circuit boards or CPU's or any crap in there. Just a power supple, regulator, rheostat that is mechanical in nature, and the diode. Probably embedded in a thermal epoxy for all I know.

Fixed front sight, Troy Folding Battle rear, Aimpoint ML3 in a LaRue QD M68 CCO mount, and extra batteries (one in the mount for the Aimpont and batteries for the TRL-1 in the grip.)

OK, if they survive an EMP, I will somehow be EVEN MORE impressed with them than I already am. Either way, one of the many reasons to have irons and have them zeroed.

I think the answer to what the best choice is has to do with these questions:
Short-term (localized disaster) or Long-term (nation or planet-wide)?
What's your AOR (urban/rural/transitioning from urban to rural)?
Will you be primarily taking game or defending yourself (based on AOR, nature of SHTF, preps in place, etc)?

A decades-long loss of power and manufacturing, for example, would heavily favor an etched glass variable-power optic for its ability to be used without reliance on a supply chain of batteries and the versatility in its ability to handle any situation.

A short-term localized disaster in an urban environment (think Katrina) would favor red dots with their unmatched durability and speed in dealing with two legged predators.

My primary concern is short-term localized disasters, which is why I run a T-1 on my SBR (and also for home defense). If I survived a long-term global disaster and had to go on foot, I would probably take a 2.5-10 with offset irons on a 16" recce-type gun for its much greater versatility.
