    One wears an Aimpoint M4s, and the other has a TA-33 in a Larue QD mount. Both have Troy BUIS. I think the TA33 is the best of the ACOG line - great eye relief and lightweight/compact. The BAC takes some practice to get used to, but once you're comfortable with it it is a good system.

    The folks that don't think they need a RDS, light or a variable powered scope (I have a 1x4 scope as an option, illuminated reticle, with a cat tail that works just fine at 1x, on par with my aimpoints) are making a lot of untested assumptions, and need to run their set up in a carbine course and a night/low light course to test their accuracy and decision making process before ignoring well tested fact based opinions. Those that think they don't need a light, being that in winter, darkness is the predominant time period of a 24 hr cycle, I'd like to hear your defense in shooting someone (FYI, a family member is the primary target of a nighttime shooting in many instances, over and over and over again) without having the ability to clearly ID your target. You'll quickly join the ranks of many Bubbas who've shot their daughter, son, wife or girlfriend in the middle of the night, because they 'heard somethin'...

    I like a RDS since I can use irons with it shut off,the light is still up in the air as I still haven't found a way that doesn't bugger up the balance or stick out like an ugly,annoying growth.

    @RogerinTPA
    for now I'm resting the rifle over my left arm and using the light in my left hand,works spiffy actually.

    Both have fixed front sight and folding rear. One has an Aimpoint H-1 in a Seekins mount for Lower 1/3rd co-witness.

    If I agreed with you, we'd both be wrong.

    Does your SHTF rifle have a red dot or magnified optics?

    For the "I run irons only"

    Irons no doubt is an essential fundamental, however if the SHTF why would you want to make PID and solid hits harder? Like many here on this forum that has seen the two way range (SHTF aka Suck), I've never said or heard anyone say, "No I'll just take irons on this deployment, my ACOG/AIMPOINT/1-X variable is useless."

    There is a reason for the acronym BUIS.

    I've been thinking of equipping an AR with an ACOG but I keep going back and forth between a TA 11/33/31. Sure the TA31's don't have a large eye relief but they make up for it in FOV. Nothing is as bomb proof as an ACOG.
