I choose red dot over magnified because it's what I trained with for ten years in LE, speed on target and ease of use in low light. YMMV.

My grab and go primaries are all set up the same with Aimpoint CompM4.

I go CompM4 for several reasons: killer battery life, how tank-like it is in build quality, RELIABILITY and larger FOV to that of the H-1/T-1 (also a fantastic red dot).
Second place earns a body bag.

A lot will be determined by what causes the shtf. If its an EMP then all our aimpoints and eotechs will be jettisoned to save weight after they are found useless. Acogs and normal scopes will be up and running. Irons will rule I believe. At least on an EMP situation. Sometimes I think of going with the original Acog TA01. I know they are seen as old school now but when the electricity is out and we are thrown back 100 years that Acog will be the best technology we have. But the majority will be forced to use irons. Any other type of shtf ordeal all optics will give you an advantage over the zombies.

Hard to find something that is perfect in all situations but, this is as close as I can come.

What is not needed at the time will be in the pack.

    Not a very good pic.

Nice. A gunfight is the last thing I want to be involved in, I'll be quietly moving through the countryside escorting the fam to our family's ranch. Variables just seem better in my paradigm.

I am with you 100%, although in a SHTF incident you may be forced to protect you and yours.

Mine is an eotech, my wife's rifle I built for her has a T-1 and the rifle I'm building for my daughter will have a 1-4 or something similar. Everything else just has irons only.

Good responses! I have a red dot and back up sights. The carbine is easy and fast to handle and the red dot keeps it so. I thought about a scope, but it seemed like I was then limiting the carbine to a bench rest rifle, which it is not made for. To go long range I would pick up a 308 or 3006 and scope that.
I expend tremendous amounts of energy and time merely to be normal.

I don't need no stinking sighting systems. I aim by sense of smell.

Yes. I'm running an Elcan Specter DR so I have red for 1x plus 4x with BDC.
