    Since you asked-

I wondered why the Rhodies painted their FALs, the original Black Rifle, the awful colors they did. I asked on a forum where Bush War veterans hang out and was told when they captured any terrs they always interviewed them to get information how to fight them better. When the terrs were asked how they spotted the Rhodesian soldiers, they answered they would almost always first see the black outline of the rifles. So the Rhodies begain painting their rifles using automotive paint, some rifles painted by spraygun but most daubed the paint on with paint brushes or old socks. They used automotive paint because it was cheap and available

When I asked why they used such funky colors, the strange blue green and the baby poop yellow, I was told because they best matched the foliage!

A rare authentic Rhodie Para FAL still wearing much of it's original Baby Poop. Turns out photos of this rifle appear in the book SAS Rhodesia. Rifle is in working condition and is located in South Africa

Magpul Stealth Gray's mission is as a Black alternative. The others are closer to Foliage Green alternatives

We tested Stealth Gray for a few years prior to release and it is very close to the venerable Sniper Gray paint color and the newer Wolf Gray clothing.

In darker light Stealth Gray looks almost black, in daylight it looks more like Charcoal. When a Stealth Gray stock is put on a Wolf Gray swatch under the same light, it matches well.

Good info - field time says movement and black plane profiles give away position most effectively in the woods, fields and organic environments. Creating alternating colors to build depth seems reasonable.

Does a stealth gray provide much visibility reduction for a rifle? There is no contrast to break the consistent color.

I am not opposed to the CDI or GDI factor, but is there a viable concept in play?

Perhaps someone has a combat story about how the "blackness" of their firearm/gear "gave away" someone's position, but for the most part this is about a new cool-guy color trend. NTTAWWT, but no need to fret over your "unstealthy" black gear.
If you see people in camp and a black rifle, you can spot them a mile away. Same goes in urban environments. Certain colors blend in better and conceal you and your weapon.

Does that apply or interest you? Maybe not, but it does for a lot of folks. For me, I have fully camo'd (Multi-Cam, Highlander, Typhon, etc) AR's for hunting 4 legged critters. So it seems somewhat natural to have guns setup for the more urban environments.

That's good to know. Next time I have to defend myself in one, I'll make sure to bring a gray AR so I don't blow my cover.

A decent sized patch of black stands out A LOT at distance. Surprisingly so....

I was doing a hike on Saturday in the hills north of San Francisco and had a chance to observe some local Sherifs Department groups doing search and rescue training. Most of the people wore bright yellow/green jackets but a few wore OD green Pants an jackets. All of them had some sort of front mounted BLACK radio carrier on their chest - think 8x10 like a mini plate carrier. At 500-600 yards Obviously the neon green people were very visible but the OD green guys pretty much disappeared except when they would turn around and present the Black radio carrier. That solid "bright" black might as well have been a strobe...

In that case gray would have dawn much much less attention.

I like the color a lot. It's just not what I expected from the stock photos that sellers are using. When I received it I was taken back abit as I expecting it to be... well... more gray. Please, if you're paying attention, we need a stock in this color now because the only use I have for it at the moment is on a pistol. MOE stocks and mags in Stealth Gray please! Thank you.
