It is funny that you posted this. This is pretty much the exact rifle I have been building. I went with a stainless barrel that is heavier in case I ever want to try some distance but getting distance out if it was not my primary goal. I wanted a gun that was smoother to shoot than my 11.5 SBR and provided better ballistics if I ever want to take it out for coyotes or the like. I still wanted to keep it as light as I could so it would be quick to use and easy to carry. Mine is a complete BCM gun with an 18" stainless (ion-bonded black) barrel, a BCM comp and a SSA trigger. I am going to pick up an A5 system off a buddy that is going back to a full rifle stock. I know Paul and got my KMR 13" installed about a week ago (they are coming SOON, I saw the factory and they are building inventory so it is not sold out in 10 minutes). I put an old Bushnell Holosight on it for now while I decide what I want. I have to look at some of the 1-4 or 1-6X scopes that are floating around.
I haven't put it on a scale yet so I am not sure what the finished weight is. Even with the heavier contour barrel the gun feels light with the KMR.

Next to my other BCM for a size comparison. The top one is an 11.5" with a Gem-Tech HALO.

Not to be a jerk or anything, but I do not see what the relationship is between this rifle and a Mk12. Other than gas system length, these are pretty different guns.
How does this compare, shootability wise, to your 14.5 mid/A5/E-carrier setup?
I'm in agreement with Justin.... Other than the 18" barrel with rifle gas system, this isn't even close to what the Mk12 is. There's actually a very good article about the Mk12 in the most recent issue of the AR15 magazine. It tells you all about each barrel they extensively tested and why they chose the barrel they did. The article actually details why they chose each and every part they used and why.
Lastly, barrel length has nothing to do with accuracy. A good 16" SS barrel would have no problem out shooting a good 18" Chrome lined barrel.
Once you read about the Mk12 and how it was developed, you'll realize what you built isn't even close to being a spin off of one. At the end of the day, it's just an AR with an 18" barrel.

Bro, chill. That's why I called it an "off-shoot concept".
I know what a true Mk12 is. That's why I didn't call this a variant. I have the magazine article in my hands and it's based on what Daniel Defense did to MODIFY the design (to make it better...and I think that's exactly what they did). It covers some history of the Mk12 development as well. I'm aware. Thank you.
EDIT: The Wikipedia article on the Mk12 (a decent treatise): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United..._Purpose_Rifle
"The SPR concept was originally proposed by Mark Westrom, currently president of ArmaLite, while working at Rock Island Arsenal. The program was an outgrowth of the desire by both US Army and Navy special operations forces for a rifle with greater effective range than an M4 carbine but still shorter in length than a standard issue M16A2/A4. The SPR program appears to have grown out of both the SOPMOD Block II program, and the U.S. Navy SEALs Recon Rifle (a 16" flat-topped M16 carbine). The Naval Surface Warfare Center, Crane Division expanded on the Recon Rifle."
Based on that stated concept, how is my build not connected? If I slapped a 1-4 on it would it be "true" at that point? Except I'm not going for a true Mk12....I'm modifying that concept for what works for ME. In terms of terminal ballistics, an 18" barrel is superior to a 16" if for no other reason than the additional muzzle velocity it provides. I bet this gun will outshoot me with good ammo when under stress...so I'm not losing my mind over extreme accuracy. That wasn't my goal.

Smoother. But that's kind of a misnomer. The gun just moves less in every direction. In terms of performance on target...the dot just moves less and I don't have to fight it as much to keep it on target when using unconventional positions (which tend to give you less leverage on the gun).
It makes 5.56 XM193 55gr feel like softball 55gr .223 granny-fart loads.

Bufford & Mikem, very very cool setups.
Bufford, what kind of accuracy expectations do you have with your rifle? I've never owned / shot an 18" with rifle gas, however I've read that some think there are concerns w/ reliability. Any reliability issues with your setup?
This looks an ideal modern day expression of the original M16A1, or general purpose rifle w/ more range expectation over an M4. Excellent setup!
BTJ - I like both the concept and the end result. I believe I'm now inspired to do something similar but with a low-powered variable optic. Don't forget to update the thread with pics of the KMR installed!
I may be wrong but it seems that the rear MBUS is not at the farthest aft position...is there a reason for this?
