Why the hole on the top of the butt stock?

Seriously, how many receiver extensions are numbered on the top these days? Why does there need to be an aggravating hole on the top whose only function is to rip out beard hair? Do people really need this hole to help them index how far out their butt stock is? Am I being a sensitive little girl who needs to nut up and deal with it?

    First world problems...

I'm not completely sure this is the reason but the other day I was helping/learning to put a lower together and to put the stock on the buffer tube the guy used a punch to push the position lock down far enough to put the stock on using the hole.

Because it's there. I really doubt one person ranting will change what companies do or don't do. My question is, are you changing stock positions while your cheek is on the stock? Other than that I have absolutely no idea how you'd get your beard caught in it.

Is this rant seriously worth making an entire thread about? This seems more like something you'd crap on TOS or facebook with.
From TOS ... "buy the shit out of that thing, all the mil spec is just nonsense."

I'd say every time I shoulder a rifle that has that hope there I rip a hair out. It's not from repositioning it either.

As to why I posted this, figured I couldn't be the only one who runs into this problem. How anyone with a beard can use one of those VLTOR stocks is beyond me.

I had to check and see which of my stocks had the hole, Magpuls don't have them but my B5 bravo does...I don't remember my beard ever getting caught on that hole but I've definitely lost my share of whiskers where the stock slides onto the receiver extension. I must have a different cheek weld than you. As long as I'm not losing patches I don't care too much. It doesn't happen often enough to affect my stock choices...IMO the witness hole isn't needed on a carbine, maybe it's beneficial for some on more precision oriented set-ups?

I love everything about the B5 stock except for that hole. Could be more noticeable because both mine aren't that tight fitting on the receiver extension.

I believe the hole is there for assembly/disassembly of the latch mechanism.

This. The locating pin is installed from the top against a spring and passes through the lever and screws into the stop nut where it is roll pinned.

I don't have a beard. I find the numbering on the VLTOR receiver extensions that show through the hole in the top of the stock to be convenient .
