Thanks for the advice guys. As you can tell I'm learning about AR's and I'm honestly enjoying doing it. I'm not a LE or soldier so the worst I will probably see is a (god forbid) home invasion.

That said your points are all very good. I'll admit I'm doing this more for hobby than taking on insurgents. That said, whatever is worth doing is worth doing well. I have things to think about.

I just have to ask: what's wrong with having "just" a hobby gun? Just curious. Not everyone has to kill bad guys on a regular basis.

I'll focus on the first part of your comment since the second one is starting to get off base. There is nothing wrong with having a hobby gun and treating it like a hobby gun. The problem is when someone tries to use a hobby gun as a defensive tool. If you need any proof that certain guns are hobby guns, PM IraqGunz and ask him how DPMS rifles performed for security personnel in Iraq. If you're only going to use it to shoot pumpkins, a hobby gun is fine. If you're looking to use it to protect your life or the lives of others, I'm afraid that a hobby gun is not up to the task.

I should have been clearer. The AR in the OP is a hobby gun. I'm sorry if I made it seem like I was going to battle with it.

My 7.5 inch AR pistol on the other hand has a HD role. I personally don't think I'm far off with that one. I'll take jonconsiglio's advice and switch to a better RD and white light. Those are good points. But the rest of the gun is pretty stock as I bought it and it runs like a sewing machine thru 1000+ rounds.

Not meaning to be rude but honestly, a thousand rounds through an AR may not be a great indicator of quality. 3000 rounds in one day however is a good way to test out a rifle. One thousand rounds in one day is an indicator of quality but that same number of rounds spread out over a year or more does not necessarily mean it is a good rifle.

3000 rounds = $1500 (assuming today's prices of $0.50, reloading not getting much cheaper) in a day? I'm sorry but that's a bit much for me, my friend. No offense meant.

Not sure where you're only finding $0.50 per round ammo. Back in April of 2013 I found boxes and boxes at $0.40 per round and that wasn't even online. I definitely recommend that you get a chance to learn from someone who is very familiar with running a carbine, a good place to look would be the Alias site, there is even a link at the top of the page so before you get anything else go there and then find a class that fits your schedule.

No harm Chris, we truly are here to help and care about one another, sincerely. So when the topic arises of personal protection many at this forum get dead serious, I know I do because I see it first hand often enough. You don't need to be taking on insurgents in a foreign land as it may be within your own home you might be responsible for not just yourself and your partners, but in your own home you may be responsible for your family also.

Nothing wrong with a "hobby gun". I am a collector myself and appreciate not just the defensive side of things, but do it for pleasure as a hobby also. Just don't grey the lines. Understand each weapons role and capabilities or limitations and more important know the role on how / when they should be deployed for defense. The defensive side of things starts with the individual and their mindset and training first and foremost.

Here is a video that just came out today that hits on this very topic. Pay close attention to the 3:00 minute mark. The video talks about the discussion we have been having for the last couple of days in this thread. Take care and stay safe.

Thanks surf. I get it. It's hard to swallow but I get the tough love. It's definitely got me thinking about my primary HD choice now. Much needs to be done.
