I had an A5 a couple years ago and I ran an LMT SOPMOD on it. I could collapse the stock all the way and it was snug enough to stay put on the tube fully collapsed but not latched.

The rubber buttpad right against the buffer tube made a helluva good pogo-stick effect when I mortared it on something hard!

Am I misreading? I was told by vltor that the a5 system works with the 7 position tube and the 6 position (ar10) tube, I ordered the 6

They have 2 versions of the A5 RE, the A5 and A5SR. Don't get them confused with the Vltor standard carbine length RE.

Yes, it works. I have the AR-10 tube on two of my AR's.

The 6 position tubes are marked RE-10/A5SR. The "SR" stands for short rail, meaning that the adjustment rail is shorter on the bottom. The SR model works better with stocks that are too short to fully collapse on the RE, like the B5, CTR, etc. I'm using the A5SR, which is the AR10 tube on my SBR. Works like a charm.

What are your thoughts on the a5 with piston systems? I have an lwrc upper that I bought from a friend on the cheap to try out. The techs from Lwrc said they don't see the point of the a5 on the piston and that they install h2 in their complete rifles.

Is there any disavantage to running the A5SR in a standard 5.56 SBR or even midlength? I ask because I quite like my CTR and B5 Bravo and collapsing them fully.

There's no disadvantage, but the length of pull of the stock will be about 0.75" longer than a standard carbine RE. The CTR and B5 will leave a portion of the tube exposed when they are fully collapsed. It's not a big deal.
