And they were toasting the living shit out of those barrels too but everybody neglects to mention that part.

I have a barrel that has seen around 15K total and at least 5 of that is steel-jacked 62 grain Brown Bear. It still shoots sub 3moa with copper jacketd stuff.
My brother saw Deliverance and bought a Bow. I saw Deliverance and bought an AR-15.

I've been having major issue with key holing at surprisingly close distances. This picture was taken today and all rounds were fired at about 25 yards.
They should call that sunflower seed holing.

    1. All firearms are ALWAYS loaded.
    2. Don't point the muzzle at anything you're not willing to destroy.
    3. Keep your finger off the trigger until you're on the target and ready to shoot.
    4. Be sure of your target and backstop.

Claymore practice? I agree with a good cleansing before you get a rebarrel

I'd check out a Centurion barrel. I've had great results with mine, anyway. And Monty is first class.

I would recommend busting out some serious cleaners (ie Barnes CR-10) before you sign it off and get a new barrel. For very heavily fouled (read copper-fouled) barrels this may occasionally work wonders. I had a surplus rifle that shot like poo until I burnt through a serious pile of patches and CR-10. It was so fouled the patches came out complete blue from the accumulated copper fouling.
I was wondering about that too or excessive mag dumps and "cookin" the barrel. I've seen a few people play master blaster and destroy even a good barrel is short order.

Heat is only going to accelerate the rate of wear, and rapid fire generates a lot of it. I have a bolt gun with well north of 10K through it taking out prairie dogs, paper, and steel gongs. Thing still can manage five rounds "touching" each other at 100 yards. It's probably never fired faster than a round every thirty seconds.

I've shot through a CMMG barrel with a strong diet of steel case. Brass now and again, but Tula was going down the pipe 1k at a time on a pretty aggressive firing schedule. Get a quality barrel, ease up on the steel a bit, and bang away.

    .

    Just limit it's use...
...it would make one heck of an inside the house defense weapon...

In comparison, it's wounds would make buckshot wounds look like BB gun damage...

Is there a large amount of carbon build up at the muzzle in the FH?

Here is a thread that Robb Jensen/gotm4 posted pics and info on the subject:

May not be the issue but worth a look.
