This time around, I'm going to apply a few light coats, wiping off and reapplying as prescribed, just to see if it actually makes a difference. I don't really expect it to eliminate carbon sticking to the bolt tail, but I'm going to at least give it a shot.
    I'm interested in your findings.

It is TOS from 12 years ago... but now there's new chemicals to play with.

To be honest Mark, my expectations are that it will still accumulate carbon. I just have a hard time believing that any lube can withstand the hot gasses directly striking the bolt tail. It still works very well as a lube though. I was able to easily wipe down the entire BCG last night. Everything wiped clean except the bolt tail. After wiping the carrier clean, it still had a light sheen of Fireclean and was not dry. This was after 500 - 600 rounds and only the initial application, no follow up lubrication. I applied it pretty liberally the first go round.

Most good lubes will do reasonably well for that, it's not exclusive to the lube du jour.

Has anyone tried an ultra sonic cleaner and if so what solution did you use in it?

Tried my little cheapo chinese unit. USELESS. Just ended up with a wet bolt and splotched/damaged finish.

I got one of these thingys a month ago. Labeled as a 'Safariland B-Square - Bolt Tail - Gas Tube - Carbon Cleaning Tool - Device'

It does a great job of polishing the carbon up and making it look real shiny... maybe you're supposed to scrape it off first, then use this tool.

I have yet to find one that prevents carbon build up in that location. Just the nature of the system. I usually just knock off the big pieces, relube and go.
