Best methods to move firearms and ammo?

Looks like I will be taking my firearms to Hawaii with me in a few months. Anybody make a major move recently with their stuff? I'm not sure the best way to go about it. I don't have an extensive collection by any means, but 5 long guns and 2 handguns would be a lot to hand carry. If I shipped it through UPS or something, would it have to go to an FFL? I honestly don't even know where to start with this stuff.

You can ship guns to yourself. Check the ATF FAQ.

For 5 long guns and 2 handguns, I'd fly them with me.

Get some large aluminum sides cases that will hold two long guns and put the hand guns in with the third case with the single long gun.

Did the same thing about 3 years ago. Flew with almost the same number of guns. East coast to Hawaii.

Fly with them. Get a good pelican case. Don't ship to a dealer. They will charge you $100/gun and you'll have to get a purchase permit.

You have three days to register them no matter which route you go however. Make sure that's in your schedule. It will take about an hour minimum not counting time to get to the police station.

Absolutely just fly with them. Anything else is an even bigger pain in the gonads.

Hmm ok. I may just leave them with my parents until I fly back for the first time then I guess. Probably would be a lot easier than having to carry a big ass case full of guns around the first time I get there. Anyone know anything about transporting ammo? Honestly a lot of it will probably be gone by the time I leave, so if that's a pain in the ass I may just leave what's left.

Most airlines have an 11lb limit, must be in factory boxes and can't be with firearms although I did break that last rule once and never heard a peep from anyone. Ammo is definitely going to be a reality check for you. Back in 09 5.56 was selling for $25/20rds. Can't order it online because no one will ship it.

Shit. I thought I'd have to pay a little more for shipping but didn't realize it'd be like that...

I think you can order it via UPS HAZMAT but you're looking at $50-$100 or something ridiculous on top of the standard charge. The good news is that USPS priority applies to Hawaii and UPS has a faux "ground" route that isn't too expensive. As long as you go to OGC tactical for ammo (I hesitate to even guess what ammo is running on island after sandy hook) and "firearms" you can still order all the accessories you want online.

Or just fly out your girlfriend every few months and have her bring 11lbs of ammo with her. It works out to about 400 rounds per flight per passenger of 5.56. You can forget any serious quantities of .308.

With ammo USPS flat rate boxes are your best friend, unless we are talking huge amounts. And yes I know about the regulations, etc.
