Much like Christians disavow the likes of the Westboro Baptists as being non-Christians, the Muslims want you to believe that members of AQ are not really Muslims. The WBC is not a very good example, considering it is/was just pretty much one family that made up the church and called themselves a church and Christians.

I was not aware that I was limiting myself to the WBC when I said "the likes of…" Feel free to choose any other pseudo-Christian sect that seeks to visit violence against non-believers. I suspect that they will garner the support of less than 5% of the US population. Contrast this with Saudi Arabia where almost half of the population thinks that violence against civilian non-believers is justified.

My general rule of thumb is if people are screaming "Allah Akbar" when they kill somebody then Islam IS the problem.
If you tried this crap at a Civil Rights museum and suggested the KKK wasn't the problem, only a few misguided members who were willing to go beyond beliefs and into acts of violence you wouldn't get very far.
It's essentially the same thing.
Islam and the KKK are both belief systems that teach quite a bit of hatred. Not every member commits criminal acts, but in nearly every case those who do commit criminal acts are motivated by their belief system. And their acts of violence and terrorism are disproportionately large when compared to most other mainstream belief systems. If the KKK had a follow as large as Islam people would die every day.
For some reason most people can figure out the KKK is a hateful ideology that promotes violence against all others but for some reason just can't see it when looking at Islam.
It's hard to be a ACLU hating, philosophically Libertarian, socially liberal, fiscally conservative, scientifically grounded, agnostic, porn admiring gun owner who believes in self determination.

While I think you know I don't care much for Islam in the least I also wouldn't equate every Muslim to a white supremacist who is an active member of the KKK.

OK, can we equate them to fundamentalists groups like Al Quida? So even though a lot of white racists aren't actual members of the KKK, AN or any other group they have shared beliefs.

Every Muslim is not a racist, however I'd suggest that every white supremacist is. I'm as frustrated with minority crime as anyone, I am disgusted that minorities and self-loathing weak whites are destroying the fabric of this nation and I certainly don't care about offending Muslim sensibilities at the memorial or anywhere else we call a spade a spade. But still reality is what it is and while Islam was the primary motivating factor for 9/11 not all Muslims are racist Christian haters by default. In fact a great many are very content to live side by side with white Christians, both now and in the ancient past.

But nearly every Muslim subscribes to a hate filled ideology and belief system which sees things like Jihad as perfectly valid every Fatwa as legitimate. There isn't a lot of secular Islam out there, which is actually part of the problem.
So while certain Islamic groups may condemn "terrorism" when pressed on the issue they will typically not denounce the validity of the Jihadist motivators that resulted in a given act of terrorism or denounce any Fatwas that may have contributed to terrorism.
That there are still Islamic theocracies where entire populations of countries support Sharia Law is also a huge part of the problem.
