    Big Bend Open Road Race

Okay, I'm the first to admit I enjoy poking a little fun at Texans now and again, just 'cuz they seem to be beggin' for it a good part of the time. But I gotta say this road race looks like one hell of a lot of fun. They close off the highway between Fort Stockton and Sanderson, toss out the speed limit, and let folks rip down the road making a 118 mile round trip just as fast as their wheels will take them. My wife would do back flips to get a chance to open up her little turbo Miata on the open road. http://www.bborr.com/

    A little taste:

    Any members ever drive this?

They also have a road cycling race every year, with I believe multiple stages.

I grew up out there. There are several road races for bicycles, along with some very good mountain bike rides that raise money for wounded/disabled veterans. Former President Bush frequently rides and helps with the latter.

And yes, it is desolate, for lack of a better word. You really have to want to go to Sanderson - there is very little to do when you get there.

I've driven and cycled that road a lot. I'm honestly not sure what my best time is for that stretch. I'm positive it's within the limits allowed by law, of course.

I thanked the very nice Trooper, gave him a bottle of ice water from my cooler (it was August) and went on my way at a slower rate of speed. If you are on I-10 in that part of the world, the speed limit is 85 MPH, I think. A few people even drive that slow on it.

It looks like a tropical paradise out there to me. I guess I will be forced to confirm that in few months. Viva la West Texas.

Why, I was driving to Alpine, of course. That's what I was doing in Coyanosa.

I had a buddy that worked at the shrimp farm there, and he made me a deal on some shrimp, but I had to come get them. We had butchered a steer and were going to make surf and turf on the grill.
