More or less because first time buyers often are sold what the gun shop says they need. I find it amusing listening to some of the exchange at the LGS.
If I can get a word in, I'll suggest visiting this site prior to purchase. If they still want the cool stuff at the LGS, so be it.

You can get started (reloading) for way less than that. I've been reloading since the mid 70's and it's paid for itself many times over. I also like being able to fine tune my ammo to the weapon. MUCH better than factory and I enjoy doing it. Relaxing part of the hobby. Nice having a couple presses so I'm not always changing dies too.

That's when I go "Game On" and start asking those questions that get you the "Deer in the headlights looks" from them. I also hit them up with, "If that BM or DPMS is that much better than that BCM or Colt, how about matching the price ?" They are only sitting there collecting dust and have been there forever anyway.... Usually I get the "Well we can't do that". But once in a great while I'll get a good bite and I have cash in hand if they call my bluff.I've always wondered if they get a better commission selling junk or are actually that brainwashed ???

I was in our local Sportsmans Warehouse a little while back, looking for a PEPR mount for my nephews budget build. A fellow went up to the AR section of the gun counter and asked about the most popular rifle. The clerk truthfully mentioned BM & DPMS. Then the guy said "then they're the best." At which point, the clerk shocked me by saying "Not necessarily. I'd rather buy a Colt, or one of these S&W MP15s." Just goes to show that the big box stores are not always hopeless.

I think half the problem is customers don't know the difference between quality and recognized. Their LGS sells bushmaster, dpms, olympic, etc., so they see those names, and all of the sudden they think "oh yeah, bushmaster makes a good gun." Meanwhile they have never even heard of bcm, dd, noveske, etc. Ultimately its on them for not doing the research, but I think what's available locally skews the perception of what must be good.

Customers just don't know what they want and it takes time for them to be educated on the over all system, I had a guy today that came in looking at a Rock River because his buddy told him that they never go wrong, does his buddy that only shoots 150rds a year have experience enough to make that judgment call, no, but that is what he wants and it looks tactical, and he wants to get into coyote hunting, which he won't but I nod politely. "I want good accuracy out to 200yds", as if that is a distance that takes effort, and so on. I show him a Rock River and then some others, for Coyote and other hunting needs I show him an Ambush, DD's hunting line in .223/5.56 with an 18" barrel, great for over 200yrds, as well as a colt cre18 with a stainless steel barrel and 1/8 twist, great for coyote and just having fun. He went with the Rock River because his friend told him so, and the rifles that I showed him were over the price of the Rock River Operator 3. I sold him the gun, and I'm sure he will be back after it jams telling everyone if only he got a piston system it would have been fine, or he will be the guy who wont shoot it and it will sit in the safe. Maybe 25% of the people I see in my store care about the AR they are purchasing or have a good amount of knowledge, but the other 75% are blind and of them maybe another 25% will consider what I tell them, often pointing them to this site. Having said all of this, some of my coworkers who don't shoot a lot of AR's like Bushmaster and Rock River and all the others, because their knowledge is limited. My one Army counterpart loves Windham, but if I asked him the steel of their barrels, he wouldn't have a clue. I hope this is more insightful than a soapbox, but a spade is a spade
