The plan was simple. Kill parents and sister, plant bombs, start fires and shoot students as they flee the building. And unlike most Columbine "wannabes" John David LaDue seemed to have had everything he needed to be successful in his plans.

Minnesota town blindsided by ‘normal’ teen’s massacre plot

Waseca, Minn., is reeling after authorities revealed they had broken up a 17-year-old boy's plan to carry out a massacre at his high school. John LaDue was obsessed with mass shooters from the Columbine and Sandy Hook killings and had amassed an arsenal of weapons and pressure-cooker bombs, authorities say.

John LaDue, 17, was hit with a stack of felony charges, including attempted murder and bomb possession, for the failed plan during which he sought to spill the blood of "as many students as he could," authorities said.

A notebook detailing the plan showed how the wannabe mass-murderer planned to first kill his parents and then start a fire in a rural area outside of town to distract first responders.

The 180-page journal also contained details from other school massacres like Sandy Hook and Columbine and revealed how LaDue revered Columbine killers Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris.

Officers nabbed the unhinged 11th-grader Tuesday after a tipster reported seeing LaDue skulking in and out of a storage unit where he kept many of his materials.

The caller, Chelsie Schellhas, told the Star-Tribune she was washing dishes in her kitchen when she spotted the teen lugging a backpack through her backyard headed toward the storage facility.

Schellhas said she called the cops after LaDue took a long time opening the unit, leading her to believe he was breaking in.

Three cops found LaDue at the unit at about 7:30 p.m.

During a search, they found ammunition boxes, explosive chemicals, a pressure-cooker, steel ball bearings and gunpowder, police said.

LaDue later told police he would have shot at the officers if he had a gun on him.

A search of the teen's home turned up three completed bombs, an SKS assault rifle, a Beretta 9-mm handgun, hundreds of rounds of ammo and a safe with several other guns.

always say they should never idolize these punks never put there name out there come up with something like suspect #1 and #2

guys like this that are caught alive quick public execution by hanging or something but not drop no broken neck just kick out the chair on them

How does a 17 year old secure a contract to rent a storage unit? I don't know the specifics but there are generally things like age requirements, etc.

The teen's home or his parents home?

How does a 17 year old purchase a dreaded SKS with the shoulder thing that goes up, other firearms to include at least one handgun, hundreds of rounds of ammo? Let me guess the old gun show loophole song and dance right?

How can Jr. construct IEDs and bring home a safe full of guns/ammo without mom and dad noticing anything? A dime-bag of Mary Jane sure, a porno mag you bettcha but a safe full of guns and ammo under their noses!? Please . . .

It sounds like another case of a twisted criminal, doing twisted criminal things. Thank goodness they caught this little punk before he destroyed an entire community, and lastly, put a hurting on our rights.

I hope that there is extensive psychological evaluation/investigation of this individual. It would be great if that information is made public, though it won't happen due to HIPAA. We really need to understand the mind of these mass shooters. What is his exact diagnosis? For that matter, what is Jared Loughner's (the Aurora shooter) diagnosis? We need to study the living examples to potentially understand how to pre-emptively identify at risk individuals.
