We celebrated Cinco de Mayo at work today. The food was insanely good.

We also celebrate Chinese New Year, Diwali, Hannukuh, Christmas, Veteran's Day, Easter, Memorial Day - just about every holiday, since we employ a lot of neat people. Some days I think we are an eating club that likes to meet in the same building to make money every now and then.

It celebrates a defeat of the French, surely someone around here appreciates that fact.

In honor of Cinco de Mayo I went to my favorite pizzeria.

Sadly there is a bar nearby and I watched tables full of people downing multiple pitchers of margaritas stumble to their cars to drive home.
It's hard to be a ACLU hating, philosophically Libertarian, socially liberal, fiscally conservative, scientifically grounded, agnostic, porn admiring gun owner who believes in self determination.

    Chuck, we miss ya man.

I don't know about elsewhere around the country, but here in Texas I find it funny (read: unpatriotic) that the younger generations celebrate a Mexican holiday (very few know the reasoning/history behind it), but not Texas Independence Day... Much less know what day it is (March 2)...

I'm sure most people just use Cinco de Mayo as an excuse to drink beer. I, however, never need an excuse to drink beer.

In 1862, a French force of 6000 suffered defeat laying a three month siege to Puebla, Mexico and the 6500 defender's. A year later the French returned with 30k troops and more or less took over Mexico. The US was too busy with our own Civil War to enforce the Monroe Doctrine. I had read somewhere that by the time the Confederacy surrendered, Lincoln (or possibly Johnson) invited the French to leave, offering to help them pack with the most blooded army in the world at that time. The French and their European allies closed shop and left Emperor Maximilian to face the music.
