HATE Reading stuff like this. RIP kid

Yes, it's rare, but the amount of fail here boggles the mind. It's one thing to assist the cleaning of the gene pool by ignoring all the basic safety rules and off-ing yourself, a totally different matter when it's another person, and 11 year old kid. Secondary, these types of events impact all gun owners as we collectively grown over the total lapse in basic safety which will be used against law abiding safety minded people nation wide. We know these events no common, but what can we do to reduce them that does not infringe on our Rights?

Man Kills 11-Year-Old Nephew While Showing Off Gun's Laser Sight

A man accidentally shot and killed his 11-year-old nephew on Saturday as he demonstrated the laser sight on one of his guns by pointing it at the boy's head.

The boy, identified by WNEP as Hunter Pedersen, was visiting his grandfather's home in Delaware Township, Pennsylvania on Saturday when he asked his uncle, who lives in the home's basement with his son, to see his gun collection.

The uncle, 34-year-old Chad Olm, obliged and showed the boy and his son several weapons—all of which Olm claimed were unloaded—from his locked gun safe, including a .357, a .22 and a 9 mm. As he was showing Pedersen another a .40-caliber Glock 27, Olm decided to demonstrate the gun's laser sight.

"Look, you have a red dot on your forehead," Olm recalled one of the boys saying, according to court records obtained by the Pocono Record.

At that point, the 11-year-old reached for the gun, causing Olm to accidentally pull the trigger.

It's bad enough when they kill themselves (like the guy that shot himself in the head demonstrating that an unloaded gun was safe) but a kid is tragic. Sheer negligence

Makes me feel ashamed as a fellow resident of the region, especially since the 2A supporters here need good examples set forth as opposed to this garbage. Beyond the horrific reality the family now endures we are all diminished as a result of this carelessness.

Makes you want to blame the parents who let their kids visit the gung-ho gun owner to see his "collection", but without knowing more all one can do is speculate and feel bad for the boy.

The story is getting lots of attention here and perhaps rightfully so. Hard to argue that incompetents without criminal records deserve access to guns when this happens but all we can hope for is a broader lesson learned.

Four painfully simple rules and this guy violated THREE of them.

    1. All guns are always loaded.
    2. Never let the muzzle cover anything you are not willing to destroy.
    3. Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on the target.

    4. Be sure of your target and what is beyond it.

Maybe people should start getting THAT tattooed on their body.

Sickening that the "responsible adult" tried to lay blame on the "child" because the "child" reached for the gun causing the "responsible adult" to accidentally pull the trigger on a gun he thought was unloaded.

When I was 12 I knew you NEVER pointed guns at people unless it was your intention to shoot them. Largely I blame anti gunners who have broken the chain of responsible gun ownership to the best of their ability.

I meet too many people buying their first gun as an adult who grew up in a house where "guns weren't allowed." This means nobody teaching them gun safety as a kid and reinforcing it over the years. We also don't teach gun safety the way we teach drivers education.

Can you imagine if a person had never been taught anything about driver safety, never driven a car and at the age of 25 you hand them the keys to something? Well that's basically what is happening too often with guns.

And it isn't enough to be able to "repeat" the four rules of gun safety. You have to understand why they are rules rather than inconveniences. The above situation is absolutely and completely unacceptable and there are no excuses. This is so much worse than the guy who waited for a burglar in his garage or the other guy who finished off the burglars in his basement that I don't know where to begin.

Keep preaching to the choir but as you know almost anyone here is aware of these basic rules. Sadly we as a general community have little to no oversight regarding the rest of the periodic miscreants.

Ya know, I never wanted to become "that guy" but I think I'm gonna start being an asshole about violations of the four rules when I see them. I always wondered what the problem was with the "all volunteer gun safety enforcement" types but I'm so sick of the dickhead contingent I finally get it.

Corrections will now begin with the phrase "Hey asshole..." followed by pointing out the rules of safe gun handling they are currently violating. I'm just seeing it far more frequently than I have in the past.

What is with people and not checking the chamber when handling a firearm??
It is from the construction of underground FEMA camps. I can't say more because there a guy parked in front of house in an AMC Pacer. He is acting like he talking on the phone, but I know better.

I have to sign off now & put my laptop in the microwave.

Even if you visibly and physically verify the chamber, you still don't point it at a kids head so he can have a red dot on it.
